KING’S HEAD UNDONE AS STAG CONTINUE POOL TITLE QUEST
NEWPORT (Shropshire): The tie of the night on week nine of the Marston’s Newport & District Pool League was the Stag’s visit to the King’s Head in Chetwynd End.
George Allen got the better of Monday night Telford league team-mate Bobby Perry to put the visitors into a 0-1 lead and Mick Manning disposed of Ed Keenan to make it 0-2. Trevor Smith gave the home side a lifeline in rack three, only for Neil Dale to oust Mick Collins to make it 1-3. Irene Whittington and Alex Davidson joined the fray in the doubles, but they were unable to turn the King’s Head’s fortunes around and the Stag sealed a 1-5 win.
The all-Legion derby was a high-spirited affair and the second-placed A team prevailed to maintain their title push with victory by the odd frame.
Sutherland Arms dropped two frames in a tense tussle with the Shakespeare in Tibberton. Matt Mansell, Wayne Dodd and Ian Swinnerton put the home team into a 3-0 lead, but an impressive Kim Rigby stunned Andy Fishwick to give the Shakespeare a fighting chance. When she teamed up with Barry Smith to beat Jack Hooper and Swinnerton in rack five to make it 3-2, home nerves were jangling. But Mansell and Dodd dug deep to seal the frame and the two points.
Fourth-placed WWFC faced a tricky visit to the Horns in Gnosall and prevailed by the odd frame in an exciting match. The in-form Craig Williams and Tom Vernon put the visitors into a 0-2 lead with wins over Jamie Wright and Martyn Holford, but Dave Jolley and Scott Smith levelled against Kevin Genner and Chris Nolan to set up a fascinating doubles showdown. The Williams-Vernon double act sealed the fifth frame and Ryan Genner teamed up with his father in the final rack to beat Wright and Smith and seal the win.
There were emphatic 6-0 wins for both Honeysuckle sides. The Hawks got the better of Haberdashers Arms and the Harriers cruised through against the Royal Navy Club. Russ Woodhouse, Neil Perkins, Owen Rigby and Tom Tonna made it 4-0 in the singles frames against Dan Piper, Mark Kijuk, Jez Price and Alan Pritchett and Dean Smith joined the visitors in what developed into two much closer doubles frames.
Junction B became embroiled in a tense tussle at the Pheasant. Mick Ashforth undid Alistair Griffiths to give the Norbury side an early lead, but that’s as good as it got for the visitors. After a James Morris foul from the break, Tom Sayce cleared to level and Craig Hutchinson and the esteemed Jack Jones made it 3-1 by taking out Dave Blount and Ryan Morris. The Pheasant then prevailed in both doubles racks to confirm an impressive win.
Junction A were on the wrong side of another potent Wheatsheaf performance. The Chetwynd Astoners added a 2-4 away win to last week’s stunning success against the King’s Head and that moved them up to the dizzy heights of eighth in the league.
Andy Wakefield edged his opener against Hyla Marklew to make it 0-1, but Sion Richards and Steve Roycroft his back against Al Harvey and Paul Skitt to make it 2-1. Nigel Sandbrook settled into the number four role well to level the match with a win over Gordon Sidebotham and the visiting quartet held their never in the doubles to confirm a useful win.
King’s Head B didn’t play following the Navigation’s withdrawal from the league due to a lack of players.
