STAG THRASH HONEYSUCKLE HAWKS TO STAY TOP IN NEWPORT

NEWPORT (Shropshire): There’s no stopping the Stag in the Marston’s Newport & District Pool League and the Market Drayton side overcame the major hurdle of the Honeysuckle Hawks to maintain their 100% start to the league season.

The Drayton side stormed into a 4-0 lead in the singles frames with wins for George Allen, Mick Manning, Neil Dale and Kyle Smith over Mark Groom Gary Lewis, Jason Shilcock and Marcus Thomas. The additional of Ross Richards-Jones to the away team’s doubles line-up made no difference to the 6-0 outcome.

NRBL A remain in second after dismissing the Shakespeare with the loss of one frame. Simon Walley struggled to shake off Barry Smith to make it 0-1 and Mick Beech added a second soon afterwards. Chris Eaton made it three, but Kim Rigby was unfortunate not to beat Jack Dicken to make it 1-3. Honours were shared in the doubles.

The Sutherland Arms were awarded a walkover win after the Horns were forced to miss the match because of player work commitments. The non-appearance of the Gnosall side meant that they also incurred a two-point deduction.

WWFC maintained their impressive start to the league season with a 4-2 win over the Royal Navy Club and that kept them ahead of King’s Head A and in fourth place. The latter were forced to dig deep at the Wheatsheaf in Chetwynd End before losing out in the upset of the evening. “The mighty ‘Sheaf strike again,” messaged a delighted Paul Skitt after the match.

In-form Craig Williams and Tom Vernon put WWFC into a 2-0 lead over the Navy Club’s Mark Kijuk and Dan Piper, but Gerry Nunn stunned Kevin Genner to make it 2-1. Chris Nolan edged his frame against Alan Pritchett to give the home team control again and Williams and Vernon sealed the points in rack five, only for an impressive Nunn and Pritchett to strike late to make it 4-2.

Honours in the all-Junction clash went to the B team. Hyla Markew got the A side off to a good start with a win over landlord Mick Ashforth, but James Morris, Steve Purves and Ryan Morris hit back to make it 3-1 with successes over Steve Roycroft, Sion Richards and Gordon Sidebotham.

Marklew and Richards set up a grandstand finish by securing frame five, but the Morris duo came good when it mattered again to clinch the match in the final frame after Sidebotham suffered a cruel black and white in-off that would have confirmed the draw.

The Pheasant put a series of indifferent results behind them to earn a point at King’s Head B, with Ian Perry on the score sheet again for the home team. Haberdashers Arms entertained NRBL B in Knighton, but the score was not available as we closed for press.

The Navigation has officially withdrawn from the league with immediate effect and that means their fixtures will be classed as byes from now on. All points awarded to teams to date have been removed from league tables.
