STAG AHEAD AS TOP THREE SHARE SAME FRAME DIFFERENCE

NEWPORT (Shropshire): Market Drayton’s Stag maintained their 100% start to the Marston’s Newport & District Pool League season with a 1-5 victory in a friendly atmosphere at Newport Legion against NRBL B.

The former Royal Victoria Hotel team gave a good account of themselves against the defending champions and the match could very easily have gone into the doubles finely poised at 2-2. But the Stag maintain a two-point lead at the top of the table after singles wins for George Allen, John Grobnik, Mick Manning and Neil Dale and a final rack doubles success for Allen and Manning helped them on their way.

Both the Sutherland Arms and Newport Legion maintained the pressure with respective wins over the Royal Navy Club and the Haberdashers Arms. The Legion crushed the ‘Dashers, with an in-form Chris Eaton, Jack Dicken, Simon Walley and Mick Beech getting the better of Nathan Name, Mike Caswell, Janet Lane and Dave Heeley to make it 4-0 in the singles and there was no way back for the villagers in the doubles.

The Royal Navy Club took two frames off the Sutherland Arms before going down 2-4. The top three now share exactly the same frame difference after seven weeks of what is developing into the closest league for years.

WWFC remain fourth after getting the better of the Navigation in Gnosall and King’s Head A are a clear fifth after edging their contest with Junction B. Craig Williams and Tom Vernon set WWFC on their way in Gnosall with a pair of wins over J. Barnett and Jordan Clay, although Bethan Kinnersley hit back by beating Ryan Genner. Chris Nolan made it 1-3 and Williams and Vernon sealed the points in rack five.

King’s Head A dropped one frame against Junction B. Bobby Perry, Ed Keenan and Irene Whittington made it 3-0 against James Morris, Dave Blount and Steve Purves, but Ryan Morris gave the Junction a lifeline against Alex Davidson. Trevor Smith joined Perry to seal the points in the fifth frame.

The middle of the table remains crowded. Honeysuckle Hawks saw off the Wheatsheaf without losing a frame and the Harriers became embroiled in a tricky contest at the Pheasant and emerged victorious by a 1-5 score line.

Russ Woodhouse cleared well against Alistair Griffiths to make it 0-1 for the Harriers, but Tom Sayce sealed frame two to level when Neil Perkins jawed the black. Owen Rigby rode his luck to edge out Gaz Davies and Tom Tonna got the better of Craig Hutchinson to make it 1-3. Dean Smith and Perkins sealed the points in frame five and Tonna cleared well in frame six to make it 1-5.

The Horns earned a crushing 6-0 victory over the Shakespeare in Gnosall and climbed to seventh on frame difference. Jamie Wright, Martyn Holford, Dave Jolley and Scott Smith did the damage in the singles frames with wins over Barry Smith, G. Parsons and Jess and Kim Rigby.

Junction A got the better of King’s Head B in the final match of the night in Norbury.
