NEWPORT LEGION CLAIM POOL TOP SPOT ON FRAME DIFFERENCE
NEWPORT (Shropshire): There has been no love lost between NRBL A and the Wheatsheaf in recent seasons and matters weren’t helped when the home team crushed their opposition without losing a frame to go top of the Marston’s Newport & District Pool League on frame difference.
Simon Walley, Chris Eaton, Mick Beech and Jack Dicken disposed of Nigel Sandbrook, Andy Wakefield, Paul Skitt and Al Harvey in the singles and it was one-way traffic in the doubles as well, as the Legion sealed a comfortable 6-0 win.
The Haberdashers hosted Market Drayton’s Stag in Knighton and the defending champions dropped two frames on their way to a 2-4 win. The Stag now trail NRBL A by just one frame after five weeks of the league, although both teams maintain their 100% records.
The Sutherland Arms returned to their former home venue at the Pheasant and put the home team to the sword. Tom Fisken, Ian Swinnerton, Wayne Dodd and Andy Fishwick did the damage in the singles racks and Jack Hooper and Matt Mansell joined the fray in the first of the doubles frames to cap a disappointing night for Gaz Davies, Lee Matthews, Craig Hutchinson and Tom Sayce.
WWFC faced a tricky away clash at Junction A and continued their run of good form with a 2-4 win. Craig Williams, Tom Vernon and Ryan Genner put the away side into a 0-3 lead at the expense of Hyla Marklew, Steve Roycroft and Gordon Sidebotham, but Sion Richards beat Chris Nolan to give the canal siders a lifeline.
Marklew and Richards set up a grandstand finish by beating Williams and Vernon in rack five, but Nolan and Genner held their nerve in the final frame to seal the win.
King’s Head A returned to winning ways with a nailbiting 4-2 victory over a makeshift Honeysuckle Harriers side at Chetwynd End. Bob Perry pushed stand-in player Darren Lowe aside to make it 1-0 to the home team, but an excellent clearance by Russ Woodhouse against Mick Collins levelled the match. When Dean Smith potted the black and the white knocked a red in on the rebound, it gifted Ed Keenan the third frame, but Neil Perkins cleared up against Irene Whittington to level the match at 2-2.
Perry and Keenan played well to dispose of Lowe and Woodhouse in rack five to make it 3-2 to the home side and Phil Emery and Trevor Smith edged a marathon final frame against Smith and Perkins to seal the points after several minutes of tactical skulduggery by both sides.
The Horns prevailed in the all-Gnosall clash at the Navigation. Wins for Jamie Wright, T. Rigger and Scott Smith set the away team on their way and Dai Smith joined the fray in the doubles to seal the points.
Honours were shared in a tight match between NRBL B and Junction B at Newport Legion, while Honeysuckle Hawks mastered the ‘Suckle cloth better than King’s Head B and dropped just one frame on their way to a comfortable 5-1 win.
Shakespeare visited the Royal Navy Club in the final match of the night and the home team continued their excellent start to the season by sealing the win by the odd frame.
The draw was also made for the first round of the Neil Clark Memorial Trophy. Matches will run to the usual league format and must be played before January 31st, 2016. Away team captains must contact the home team to arrange a mutually convenient time to play the match.
