STAG AND LEGION PULL CLEAR AS SUTHY THRASH JUNCTION A

NEWPORT (Shropshire): Only two 100% records remain intact after week four of the Marston’s Newport & District Pool League. Market Drayton’s Stag got the better of the Shakespeare in Newport with the loss of one frame and NRBL A travelled to Norbury to beat Junction B by a similar scoreline.

Simon Walley, Chris Eaton, Mick Beech and Jack Dicken all won their singles racks for the Legion, only for Ryan Morris to team up with A N Royster to win the first of the singles frames at the expense of Walley and Dicken.

Previously unbeaten Pheasant went down at the Horns in Gnosall. Jamie Wright got the better of Gaz Davies to put the home side ahead, only for Alistair Griffiths to level. It was one-way traffic from then on, however, and Martyn Holford and ‘Trig’ beat Liam Matthews and Craig Hutchinson to make it 3-1 and the quartet prevailed in the doubles.

Sutherland Arms remain unbeaten and climbed into the top three after inflicting a first defeat of the season on Junction A. Tom Fisken, Wayne Dodd, Ian Swinnerton and Jack Hooper undid Hyla Marklew, Steve Roycroft, Sion Richards and Gordon Sidebotham to make it 4-0 and there was no respite for the canalsiders in the doubles. Matt Mansell and Steve Horton joined the action in the last frame.

King’s Head A visited WWFC and suffered a shock defeat at the hands of an improving Telford side. Craig Williams stunned Bobby Perry to make it 1-0 and Tom Vernon got the better of Alex Davidson to make it two.

Ed Keenan gave the away side hope at the expense of Kevin Genner, but Chris Nolan sealed at least a point for the Telford side with a win over Trevor Smith. Williams and Vernon sealed the win in rack five and Nolan and Ryan Genner rubbed salt in an open wound for the Newport team.

Honours went to the Harriers in the all-Honeysuckle clash with the Hawks in a charged atmosphere on baize faster than a curling pitch. Neil Perkins edged a tense opener against Mark Groom to put the Harriers ahead, but Marcus Thomas cleared well to level against Tom Tonna.

Owen Rigby edged a scrappy third to beat Gary Lewis and Russ Woodhouse held his nerve with two shots to see off Jason Shilcock to make it 3-1. Woodhouse and Perkins managed to snatch the fifth from Thomas and Groom, but Shilcock cleared with his first visit in the final frame, leaving Dean Smith and Ross Richards-Jones without a shot on the night for their respective teams.

The Wheatsheaf hosted the Haberdashers and honours were shared, but the Navigation went down to a surprise 4-2 defeat to the Royal Navy Club that leaves them bottom of the league.

King’s Head B became embroiled in a close home match against NRBL B and honours were shared, the point moving NRBL B off the foot of the table.
