STAG, NRBL A AND PHEASANT TOP WITH THIRD SUCCESSIVE WINS
NEWPORT (Shropshire): The three teams with 100% records in the Marston’s Newport and District Pool League continued their winning ways on evening three of the season.
Market Drayton’s Stag put the Wheatsheaf to the sword, despite a major scare, Newport Legion got the better of King’s Head B and the Pheasant managed to push the Royal Navy Club aside.
The ‘Sheaf actually stormed into a 1-2 lead, with Paul Skitt damaging George Allen’s chances of winning this year’s averages. But the Drayton side dug in, regrouped and won the next three frames to seal the points.
Simon Walley got the Legion off to a good start by beating Lorna Phee, but Ian Perry struck back to level against Jack Dicken. Wins followed for Chris Eaton and Mick Beech over Maggie O’Brien and Ryan Langford, but the King’s Head set up a grandstand final frame after Phee and A.Barnes won the fifth to make it 3-2. Dicken and Eaton held their nerve in the final rack to pip Perry and Langford and seal the points.
Tom Sayce, Craig Hutchinson, Alistair Griffiths and Gaz Davies confirmed the win for the Pheasant in the singles racks against the Royal Navy Club. But Dan Piper and Jez Price regrouped to win frame five and Gerry Nunn teamed up with Alan Pritchett to pot the final black and make the score 4-2.
The tie of the night was a fascinating clash between King’s Head A and the Sutherland Arms in Chetwynd End. The match ended all square after Bobby Perry had worked his magic against Jack Hooper to put the home side ahead. Ed Keenan beat Tom Fisken to make it 2-0, but Ian Swinnerton pulled a frame back against Irene Whittington. Trevor Smith then got the better of Wayne Dodd to put the King’s in the home straight, but the Tibberton side prevailed in both doubles frames to seal the draw.
Honeysuckle Hawks hosted WWFC on superb new baize, but were stunned by the Telford side’s performance. Craig Williams and Tom Vernon put the away team into a 0-2 lead with wins over Mark Groom and Jason Shilcock, only for Marcus Thomas to hit back by beating Kevin Genner. Chris Nolan edged his frame against Gary Lewis to make it 1-3 and Williams and Vernon held their nerve in frame five to seal the points by beating Thomas and Groom.
Junction A and Gnosall’s Horns did battle in an all-Staffordshire clash in Norbury and the home team maintained their impressive start to the season by claiming victory by the odd frame.
With the loss of the pool table at the Royal Victoria Hotel, the team moved their home matches to a second table at Newport Legion and hosted the Honeysuckle Harriers. The visitors squandered a 0-3 lead after Neil Perkins, Russ Woodhouse and Owen Rigby had got the better of Cain Talbot, Harry Thompson and Anthony Winfield to put them in front.
When a fired-up Billy Holland got the better of Dean Smith to give the home team a lifeline, the comeback was already on the wall and the home quartet took advantage of two missed match-winning pots by the Harriers to snatch an unlikely draw.
The Shakespeare put their first points on the board with a useful 2-4 victory at the Navigation, while the Haberdashers Arms entertained Junction B in the final clash of the night in Knighton and honours were shared. Ryan Morris and Steve Purves won their singles frames for the Norbury side, but Paul Degg and Janet Smith secured a draw for the home team in the doubles.
