STAG, NRBL AND PHEASANT RETAIN 100% POOL RECORDS

NEWPORT (Shropshire): Market Drayton’s Stag faced a tricky away clash at Norbury Junction in week two of the Marston’s Newport Pool League, but the defending champions emerged victorious with the loss of just one frame against Junction B. James Morris was the hero for the home side and only Neil Dale blotted his copybook for the away team

Both the Sutherland Arms at Tibberton and Newport Legion (NRBL) faced potential banana skin matches against the two Honeysuckle teams. The Legion prevailed against the Honeysuckle Harriers with the loss of one frame. Simon Walley and Chris Eaton got the better of Tom Tonna and Russ Woodhouse to make it 0-2, but Owen Rigby pulled a frame back against Jack Dicken to give the home team a lifeline. Mick Beech put Dean Smith pt of his misery to make it 1-3 and the away side never looked back from then on.

Honeysuckle Hawks faired far better with an excellent draw in Tibberton. Mark Groom got the better of Wayne Dodd to make it 0-1, but Ian Swinnerton, Tom Fisken and Jack Hooper redressed the balance against Gary Lewis, Jason Shilcock and Marcus Thomas to make it 3-1 to the villagers. The away side recovered well in the doubles to clinch a point with Ross-Richards Jones joining Shilcock in the final frame.

King’s Head A were held to a tense 3-3 draw by the Horns in Gnosall. Bobby Perry and Ed Keenan put the away side into a 0-2 lead over Martyn Holford and Jamie Wright, but the Horns hit back with David Jolley and Scott Smith levelling against Irene Whittington and Mick Collins. The home side snatched the lead in the doubles, courtesy of Smith and Jolley, but Keenan and Whittington hit back to snatch a point in a tense game.

The Pheasant held top spot on alphabetical order after the opening week of fixtures and visited Gnosall to take on the Navigation. They managed to eke out a slender 2-4 win as well and remain equal top. Gaz Davies and Tom Sayce lost their singles racks and the match entered the doubles all square after Craig Hutchinson and Alistair Griffiths hit back. The ‘Phez quartet won both doubles frames to seal the win.

Junction A had won their first match of the season, but were held to a 3-3 draw by the Royal Navy Club.

The Shakespeare hosted the Wheatsheaf in Upper Bar and the visitors prevailed by the odd frame in a close contest. Barry Smith put the home side in front with a win over Nigel Sandbrook, but Al Harvey, Andy Wakefield and Paul Skitt hit back to make it 1-3 and Sandbrook and Wakefield clinched the match in frame five with a win over Graham Parsons and Callum Day.

The Royal Victoria Hotel should have visited Wrockwardine Wood Football Club, but a venue mix up meant the away side failed to turn up for the fixture and a 6-0 walkover win was awarded to the Telford side. The Vic also incurred a two-point penalty into the bargain.

King’s Head B and the Haberdashers had both lost heavily on the first night of the season but the Knighton side made up in perfect fashion for that opening defeat with a whitewash win over the Chetwynd End side. “Whoop, whoop,” quipped a delighted ‘Dashers landlady Maxine Milward,
