STAG THRASH KING’S HEAD B IN NEWPORT SEASON OPENER

NEWPORT (Shropshire): Market Drayton’s Stag began their quest for a third successive Marston’s Newport & District Pool League title in emphatic style with a comfortable 6-0 home win over King’s Head B.

It may take a few weeks to determine who will be their closest challengers this season, but Newport Legion and the Sutherland Arms at Tibberton both began well with wins over newcomers WWFC and the Royal Victoria Hotel.

The Legion overcame one of the league’s new sides with the loss of one frame. Daniel Owen destroyed Simon Walley’s bragging rights by putting the away side into the lead, but Stewart Keay, Jack Dicken and Chris Eaton made it 3-1 with wins over Chris Nolan, Kevin Genner and Tom Vernon and the home team prevailed in the doubles.

The quartet also claimed both doubles frames, although Vernon’s recovery from a persistent and niggling shoulder injury was good news for the away side going forward…

A rampant Sutherland Arms welcomed back Wayne Dodd in emphatic style with a 0-6 away win over a stunned Royal Victoria Hotel. Dodd, Ian Swinnerton, Andy Fishwick and Tom Fisken did the damage in the singles frames.

King’s Head A over-achieved with their squad of players last season, but they were comfortable winners over the Royal Navy Club at Chetwynd End. Gerry Nunn rolled back the decades to stun Trevor Smith, much to the delight of his team mates. After Smith’s tantrum, his team mates ensured there would be no first night upset on the cards and clinched the match 5-1.

Honeysuckle Hawks got their campaign off to a useful start with a 5-1 victory at the expense of Gnosall’s Horns and Honeysuckle Harriers also started well with a similar 1-5 win at the Haberdashers in Knighton.

John Stanley put the home side ahead against the Harriers’s Tom Tonna, only for Owen Rigby, Russ Woodhouse and Dean Smith to make it 1-3 with wins over Vicky Winter, Dave Heeley and Sarah Holland. The away side won both doubles frames to seal both points.

Junction A disposed of the Navigation in an all-Staffordshire clash in Norbury and the Wheatsheaf drew with Junction B in a marathon opening match at Chetwynd Aston.

A new-look Pheasant side began well with two points against the Shakespeare and Gaz Davies was the unlikely hero for the home side. Davies and debutant Alistair Griffiths put the Pheasant into a 2-0 lead and Tom Sayce returned to action after several years away from the green baize to make it 3-0.

Skipper Craig Hutchinson made it four and the home side also won the fifth through Davies and George Taylor, but Jess Rigby very nearly pulled a consolation frame back for the away side after some outrageous potting, only for Hutchinson to seal the rout.
