MARKET DRAYTON’S STAG CLINCH NEWPORT POOL TITLE
NEWPORT (Shropshire): Market Drayton’s Stag have retained their Newport Pool League title with two matches to spare after prevailing in a tense match at the Honeysuckle on Wednesday night.
The away team stormed into a 0-3 lead before being pegged back to 2-3 and it took a decisive victory in the final frame to seal the points. “I would just like to thank all my team for their outstanding play and attitude throughout what has been a very long and demanding season,” said Stag player George Allen. “ I never doubted that we could do it. We were behind for long periods of the season, but out attitude never wavered.”
LSC at the Tav earned two points with a comfortable win on a shocking table against the Navigation at the Horns, the home side returning to action for the first time since Tony Garvey was taken ill at Newport Legion last week. Thankfully, he is now off a ventilator in intensive care and making good progress in hospital. LSC look set to finish the league season in second place.
Newport Legion continued their push for third place with a 1-5 win at the Royal Navy Club, with Alan Pritchett potting well for the home side. King’s Head A can still snatch third place and their cause was supported by a 2-4 away win at Junction A.
Pheasant A prevailed in a tense match at Shakespeare A to keep the outcome of the Newport Plate League open. The match was level at 2-2 after the singles frames, but Jack Hooper rode his luck in frame five to put the away side into a 2-3 lead and, when Tom Vernon left a gentle shot short in the final frame, it was curtains for the Shakespeare after the Pheasant’s Ian Swinnerton had cleared from a foul break in the third frame.
Haberdashers hosted the Horns in Knighton in a must-win game and stormed into a 3-0 lead before being pegged back by some stubborn Gnosall play.
The Railway Tavern shared the spoils with the Wheatsheaf, but King’s Head B disposed of Shakespeare B by the odd frame. Nigel Sandbrook and Al Harvey had put the ‘Sheaf into a shock 0-2 lead before Stu Morrey and Russ Porter hit back to level. Harvey and Andy Wakefield regrouped to make it 2-3, only for Quinn and Porter to seal a point for the home side.
Pheasant B were also pegged back by Junction B in the final match of the evening
