PLAYER COLLAPSE FORCES LEAGUE POOL MATCH POSTPONEMENT
NEWPORT (Shropshire): The Newport Pool League match between the Navigation and Newport Legion was abandoned after away player Tony Garvey collapsed shortly after winning his singles frame.
Paramedics were called and team-mate Andy Crossley gave emergency assistance to resuscitate Garvey before he was taken to hospital for medical attention. Everyone involved in the league sends their best wishes to Tony and his family at this distressing time.
Market Drayton’s Stag moved to within one point of claiming the Newport Pool League for the second year in a row after they crushed the Haberdashers in Knighton without losing a frame.
That result also means that Shakespeare A remain firmly on course for a first Newport Plate title, despite losing their first match in several weeks in a thriller at the King’s Head A.
Russ Woodhouse edged the opener against Trevor Smith to give the away team the lead, but some stunning safety play by Alex Davidson helped her overturn a difficult position to beat Gary Lewis to level. An unfortunate break by Neil Perkins gave Mick Collins positional control of frame three and the home captain ground out the win in a nail-biting third frame, before Ed Keenan produced an impressive clearance against Dean Smith to make it 3-1.
When Tom Vernon jawed the black to pull the fifth back, up stepped Davidson to seal the win and a Smith error on his final ball in frame six let Phil Emery in to add the final frame. The Shake now take a two-point lead and superior frame difference over the Haberdashers into the final three games of the season.
LSC at the Tav look set to finish as the bridesmaids in the Newport Pool League for the third year in four, despite getting the better of King’s Head B with the loss of two frames.
Pheasant A remain fifth after beating the Railway Tavern with the loss of one frame. Tom Fisken, Jack Hooper, Ian Swinnerton and Anthony Allen romped into a 4-0 lead with wins over Dave Bristow, Greg Quinn, Jason Lloyd and Stu Morrey, although Lloyd and Morrey pulled a consolation frame back against Hooper and Swinnerton.
The Horns climbed back above Shakespeare A and into sixth after a 4-2 win over the Royal Navy Club. Wins for Jamie Wright, Wayne Baker and Dave Jolley set the home team on their way and Baker and Wright sealed the points in the doubles.
Junction A hosted Pheasant B and went down by the odd frame, while Junction B got the better of Shakespeare B in Newport by a similar 4-2 score line. Honeysuckle trounced the Wheatsheaf in the final match of the night and moved into seventh.
