STATUS QUO REIGNS AT TOP OF NEWPORT POOL LEAGUE
NEWPORT (Shropshire): The top three teams in the Newport Pool League all recorded straightforward victories on match night 29.
Market Drayton’s Stag remain four points clear of LSC at the Tav after benefiting from a walkover win over the Navigation, who were deducted two points for failing to honour the fixture through a lack of players.
LSC at the Tav beat Shakespeare B and Newport Legion overcame Junction B to remain third. The Stag’s walkover win means that they require six points from their remaining 10 to retain the league title provided that they do not lose two of those matches heavily. That also entails LSC winning their remaining five matches.
LSC lost just one frame on their way to a 5-1 win, with rookie Callum Day beating Greg Heathcote to give the league’s bottom side a rack. “I guess it just wasn’t his ‘Day’,” joked Callum.
Newport Legion trounced Junction B. James Cooper, Jack Dicken, Simon Walley and Mick Beech did the damage in the singles frames against S. Pieces, J. Morris, Stu Till and Ryan Morris. Cooper, who had eight-balled Pieces off the break in frame one, teamed up with Dicken to seal the rout in the final frame.
King’s Head A remain fourth after battling for a tense draw with the Honeysuckle. Mark Groom, Jason Shilcock amd Marcus Thomas had put the ‘Suckle into a 0-3 lead over Trevor Smith, Alex Davidson and Irene Whittington, but Ed Keenan pipped Ross Richards-Jones to pull a frame back. The home team also regained their confidence in the doubles to seal an unlikely draw.
Pheasant A dented the Haberdashers Arms’s chances of winning the Newport League Plate title with a crushing 6-0 win on a night when the ‘Dashers’ fierce rivals, Shakespeare A, stormed to an emphatic 6-0 home win over Pheasant B. The tie of the match was Gary Lewis’s tense opener against Jack Jones and then Russ Woodhouse and Neil Perkins went on to make it 3-0 to the ‘Shake with wins over Luke and Mike Jones.
Woodhouse sealed the win in an out-of-order doubles rack, but Scott Smith’s late appearance failed to change the away team’s misfortune and Dean Smith made it 5-0, before Lewis sealed the rout in a tense final frame after Craig Hutchinson and Smith had got themselves back into contention.
Andy Fishwick, Ian Swinnerton, Tom Fisken and Jack Hooper had put Pheasant A into a 4-0 lead over the ‘Dashers’s Paul Degg, Vicky Winter, Trevor Milburn and Mike Casewell and the tide swung even further in the home team’s favour in the doubles.
King’s Head B overcame the Horns in a tense match at Chetwynd End, after Martyn Holford had put the home side into a 1-0 lead, and the Railway Tavern recovered from last week’s disappointment to snatch a point at Junction A. The Wheatsheaf edged a good match against the Royal Navy Club in the final game of the evening by the odd frame.
The Stag reached the final of the Neil Clark Memorial Trophy for the second time with a 4-0 win over Newport Legion.
Shakespeare A and the Navigation clashed at the King’s Head and the former earned the right to face Pheasant B in the Neil Clark Memorial Plate final on July 8 after a 4-0 win.
