STAG EDGE CLOSER TO SECOND NEWPORT POOL LEAGUE TITLE

Nearest rivals, LSC at the Tav, faced a tricky visit to third-placed Newport Legion, who started the night just four points behind them. The match was tied and LSC slipped three points behind their adversaries. NEWPORT (Shropshire): Market Drayton’s Stag were made to work hard for their 6-0 win over Junction B and remain on course for a second successive Newport Pool League title with seven matches remaining.

Andy Miles and Greg Heathcote put the away side into a 0-2 lead over Jack Dicken and Simon Walley, but Mick Beech undid Ben Longstaff to make it 1-2. Ant Heathcote sealed at least a draw for the away side against James Cooper but then the Legion hit back to seal both doubles racks and send the title ever closer to Market Drayton.

King’s Head A remain in a solid fourth after securing a comfortable 5-1 win over the Royal Navy Club, but nearest rivals, Pheasant A, were held to a 3-3 draw by the Navigation. Greg Quinn set the home team on their way against Jack Jones, but Mike Jones and Scott Smith hit back for Pheasant B against Jason Lloyd and Adam Stone. Luke Jones beat Stu Morrey to make it 1-3 and the Pheasant appeared to be cruising. But Dave Bristow joined Quinn to pull a frame back and the home side regrouped to snatch the draw in the final frame.

The outcome of the Newport Plate League title may go down to the wire. Haberdashers won 2-4 at Junction A and Shakespeare A managed to snatch a draw in a tense match against the Honeysuckle. Aled Jones put the ‘Suckle into a 0-1 lead over Tom Tonna, only for Russ Woodhouse to level against Mark Groom.

Marcus Thomas brought down the curtain on his rack with Dean Smith to make it 1-2, but Tom Vernon levelled against Jason Shilcock. After Thomas had cleared impressively in frame five to make it 2-3, Vernon and Woodhouse ousted Mark Warren and Ross-Richards Jones in a black ball thriller to level.

The Railway Tavern shared the spoils in their mid-table clash with Pheasant B and Gnosall’s Horns cruised passed Shakespeare B without the loss of a frame. Wayne Baker, Jamie Wright, Dave Jolley and Dai Smith did the damage for the home side in the singles racks against Barry Smith, Callum Day and Jess and Kim Rigby.

The Wheatsheaf’s match against King’s Head B will be played next week.
