STAG EDGE A FURTHER POINT AWAY FROM FALTERING LSC
NEWPORT (Shropshire): Market Drayton’s Stag remain firmly on course for a second successive Newport Pool League title after a comfortable 0-6 demolition of Shakespeare B.
They had been forced to wait to start the match while a rearranged game between arch rivals, LSC at the Tav, and Gnosall’s Horns took place on the same Shakespeare table following the temporary closure of the Railway Tavern for renovation work.
LSC were held to a 3-3 draw by the Gnosall side and slipped two points behind their great rivals and also have an inferior frame difference. Wayne Baker edged a tense opener over Greg Heathcote to make it 0-1, but Andy Miles left Dai Smith with seven balls on the table to make it 1-1. Jamie Wright got the better of Andy Lewis to make it 1-2. Ant Heathcote levelled against Dave Jolley, before the doubles racks were shared after Baker and Wright had put the Horns into a 2-3 lead.
Newport Legion continue to hold a comfortable third place in the league after disposing of Pheasant B by the odd frame and also edged to within three points of LSC, who they play next week. In a heated exchange at the Phez, Simon Walley and Jack Dicken put the away side into a 0-2 lead with wins over Luke and Mike Jones, but Scott Smith played well against Mick Beech to make it 1-2.
In the absence of Jason Taphouse (whose name was on the Legion score sheet!), NRBL skipper Beech had a cunning plan and called upon the services of a spectating Martin Stelfox to make up their numbers. He had been sitting with the Pheasant B players and they then suffered the ignominy of watching him stealthily dispose of friend and prey Craig Hutchinson to make it 1-3.
Dicken and Walley went down to Jack Jones and Smith in the fifth and the score was 2-3, but it was a cruel irony for the home side that Stelfox bonded with Beech in rack six to stun the home team and give the Legion a 2-4 win. “I’ve never seen anything like it,” quipped a stunned Hutchinson.
King’s Head A remain fourth after thrashing Gnosall’s Navigation, but Pheasant A were held to a 3-3 draw by a stubborn King’s Head B and stay in fifth place.
The top two teams in the Newport League Plate clashed in Knighton. The Haberdashers Arms had already lost 6-0 and 0-4 to Shakespeare A this season, but their home league fixture was a much closer affair and the home team prevailed by the odd frame in a thrilling match.
Russ Woodhouse put the visitors into a 0-1 lead over Rich Bayliss, only for Paul Degg to level in a black ball thriller with Neil Perkins. An out-of-sorts Dean Smith lost heavily to Ben Harrison and Vicky Winter edged a tight frame with Tom Vernon to make it 3-1.
When Smith completely numptied a safely shot in rack five, Degg cleared the final black and, although Woodhouse and Vernon wrapped up the consolation final frame, the ‘Dashers gained top spot in the Newport Plate, although they still have to play the top six in the league over the remaining eight weeks.
Honeysuckle and the Railway Tavern squared up in the fight for sixth place and the home side got the better of their Upper Bar rivals by the odd frame.
Junction A beat the Royal Navy Club, 5-1, and Junction B shared a point apiece with the Wheatsheaf in Norbury to keep their slim Newport Plate title hopes alive.
