LSC AND STAG WIN TO SET UP DRAYTON SHOWDOWN NEXT WEEK

NEWPORT (Shropshire): LSC at the Tav continued their quest for a maiden Newport Pool League title with a comfortable 6-0 victory over the Wheatsheaf. Andy Miles, Greg Heathcote, Andy Lewis and Ben Longstaff did the damage in the singles and Ant Heathcote joined the rout in the last of the doubles frames.

Defending champions and nearest rivals, the Stag, faced a tricky visit to third-placed Newport Legion, but emerged unscathed with an excellent 1-5 victory to keep the pressure firmly on LSC. The two teams meet in Market Drayton in what promises to be a heated exchange next Wednesday night. The result also means that the chase for the league title is now a two-horse race.

King’s Head A remain fourth after getting the better of Junction B by the odd frame, but Pheasant A steam-rollered Shakespeare B in Upper Bar to keep up the pressure on the Kings for fourth place. The Railway Tavern remain sixth after dropping just one frame to the Royal Navy Club.

Honeysuckle faced a tricky visit to the Haberdashers Arms in Knighton and came away with a point, which was enough to keep the home team joint top of the Newport League Plate.

The Navigation lost to Shakespeare A for the second time this season in Gnosall and the ‘Shake move joint top of the Newport League Plate. Dean Smith and new signing Tom Tonna put the away side into a 0-2 lead with wins over Tom Garvey and Simon Ellis and Russ Woodhouse edged his frame against Neil Holford to make it 0-3. Ant Crossley got the better of Gary Lewis to make it 1-3, but Smith and Tonna beat Holford and Bethan Kinnersley to seal the points. Garvey and Crossley grabbed the consolation final frame for the home side.

Pheasant B hosted the Horns and the Gnosall side got back to winning ways with a thumping 1-5 win. Jamie Wright won the first and Wayne Baker and Josh Logan claimed frames three and four to make it 1-3 to the Horns, who also prevailed in both doubles frames.

King’s Head B met Junction A in the final match of the night and the Newport-based B team prevailed by the odd frame.
