‘SKITTY’ STARS AS RAMPANT ‘SHEAF TORMENT RAILWAY TAVERN
NEWPORT (Shropshire): A seven-ball clearance by Paul Skitt to humble Greg Quinn was the shining star in a stunning 4-2 victory for lowly Wheatsheaf against the Railway Tavern in week 15 of the Newport Pool League.
Russ Porter had put the visitors into a 0-1 lead at the expense of Nigel Sandbrook, but Al Harvey stunned Jason Lloyd to level only for Nige Hodgkinson to fall foul of Adam Stone. Skitt levelled in style to humiliate a potless Quinn and the ‘Sheaf quartet prevailed in both doubles frames to seal the points. “Taxi for Quinn,” quipped an elated Hodgkinson.
After overcoming the Honeysuckle in a tense Neil Clark Memorial Trophy round two tie by the odd frame on Monday night, LSC at the Tav maintained their lead at the top of the Newport Pool League with a rapid-fire 6-0 victory over the Navigation with Gnosall youngster Jordan Clay impressing in rack three, despite losing.
The Stag remain a point adrift after a tense success at home to the Honeysuckle, although they do have a favourable frame difference to their rivals. George Allen retained his unbeaten start to the season, although he was pushed all the way by Mark Groom.
Newport Legion remain in a comfortable third after defeating the Royal Navy Club. Simon Walley and Mick Beech made it 2-0, but Jez Price upset Colin Farge to pull a frame back. Jack Dicken made it 3-1 before Alan Pritchett played well to win a consolation fifth doubles frame alongside Price at the expense of Beech and Walley.
A weakened King’s Head A retained fourth with a 4-2 victory over Junction A. Without Mick Collins, Ed Keenan and Alex and Alan Davidson, the home side dug deep and Trevor Smith, Irene Whittington, Simon Drinkwater and Lorna Phee’s partner Alistair snatched the points.
Pheasant A hosted neighbouring Shakespeare A and sealed a marathon encounter with the loss of just one frame. Anthony Allen and Tom Fisken ground out two wins in around an hour and Ian Swinnerton made it 2-1 before Andy Phelan rode his luck to pull a frame back over Jack Hooper. Both doubles frames could have gone either way but the home team prevailed to remain fifth.
Junction B and Pheasant B fought out a close match in Norbury and the home side snatched both points. Steve Purves and Ryan Morris got the better of Scott Smith and Luke Jones to make it 2-0 and then Mike Jones and Craig Hutchinson levelled against Stu Till and Mick Ashforth. The home side regrouped in the doubles frames to seal a useful win.
The Haberdashers travelled to Gnosall to face the Horns and went down by the odd frame. Wayne Baker and Josh Logan won two frames for the home side and Martyn Holford and Jamie Wright joined the fray in the doubles to seal the points.
The match between King’s Head B and Shakespeare B will be played on February 26th.
