TOP THREE MAINTAIN WINNING WAYS IN NEWPORT POOL LEAGUE

NEWPORT (Shropshire): LSC at the Tav and Market Drayton’s Stag continued their impressive run of form to stay clear of the chasing pack after week 12 matches in the Newport Pool League.

Shakespeare B provided limited resistance to LSC in Upper Bar and were white washed by the league leaders. Meanwhile, the Stag dropped just one frame in a 1-5 win over the Navigation.

Newport Legion remained on their coat tails with a rampant 6-0 success over Junction B. Jack Dicken, Mick Beech, Jason Taphouse and Simon Walley got the better of Steve Purves, Mick Ashforth, Stu Till and Ryan Morris and the away side also won both doubles frames.

Sixth met fourth in a tense contest between the Honeysuckle and King’s Head A and the away team prevailed by the odd frame. Aled Jones and Mark Groom had put the home side into a 2-0 advantage, but Irene Whittington overcame Marcus Thomas to make it 1-2 and Mick Collins levelled. The away side snatched both doubles frames to silence the in-form ‘Suckle.

Pheasant A took advantage with a 2-4 victory over the Haberdashers in Knighton.

Pheasant B entertained Shakespeare A and sneaked a knife-edge 4-2 win. Scott Smith got out of jail to make it 1-0 in a quality safely opener, but Russ Woodhouse and Tom Vernon put the away side into a deserved 1-2 lead. When Dean Smith went out of position on his final two balls to make it 1-3, Jack Jones levelled the match with a simple black tap in and the home team somehow overcame the odds in both doubles frames to seal an unlikely win.

The Railway Tavern kept up their run of good form with a 6-0 triumph over Junction A. Stu Morrey, Russ Porter, Adam Stone and Greg Quinn did the damage against Hyla Marklew, Sion Richards, Steve Roycroft and Gordon Sidebottom and the doubles went to the home side in a surprising encounter.

King’s Head B hosted the Horns and honours were shared. David Jolley, Josh Logan and Martyn Holford won singles frames for the away side, but Bobby Perry and two doubles successes were enough to seal a point for the home team.

The Wheatsheaf and the Royal Navy Club shared a point apiece in the bottom-of-the-table clash in Bellman’s Yard.
