LSC CLAIM CRUCIAL LEGION WIN TO STAY TOP OF POOL LEAGUE

NEWPORT (Shropshire): First entertained third on the 10th Wednesday of the Newport Pool League and LSC at the Tavern came out on top against the visiting Newport Legion by the odd frame to maintain their lead at the top of the table.

Andy Lewis’s cue was on fire and he managed to get the better of Simon Walley to make it 1-0, but Jack Dicken and Jason Taphouse have been in good form recently and wins over Andy Miles and Greg Heathcote made it 1-2 to the away side. Antony Heathcote overcame Mick Beech to level a tense encounter and the LSC quartet prevailed in the doubles to seal a heated exchange.

Market Drayton’s Stag kept up the pressure with a comfortable whitewash win at Junction B. “We will make sure we continue to bite LSC’s heels very hard until they slip up,” said the Stag’s George Allen.

Shakespeare A’s six match unbeaten run came to an end at the Honeysuckle after they threw away a somewhat fortunate 0-2 lead. Russ Woodhouse and Neil Perkins rode their luck to edge frames against Mark Groom and Andy Bowsher, but Marcus Thomas sneaked a black ball thriller with Tom Vernon and Jason Shilcock’s potent clearance against Dean Smith drew the home team level. Both sides had chances to seal the doubles frames, but Shilcock’’s clearance in the final rack was enough to confirm a tense win.

King’s Head A stepped up to fourth with a clinical 2-4 victory at the Royal Navy Club. Sixth met seventh in another decisive match and Pheasant B got the better of the Railway Tavern by a similar score line.

Horns got back into winning ways at the expense of Shakespeare B. Barry Smith continued his impressive form by beating Josh Logan, but it was one way traffic from then on and the only crumbs the home side had left were those left all over the pool room floor by the visiting side after the food had been served. Hayden Hastie, Dave Jolly and Wayne Baker made it 1-3 with wins over Callum Day and Jess and Kim Rigby and the away side sealed both doubles frames.

King’s Head B were made to work hard to dismiss the Wheatsheaf with the loss of two frames. Honours were shared in the all Staffordshire clash between the Haberdashers and Junction A, but the result of the match between Pheasant A and the Navigation was not available as we closed for press.
