STATUS QUO IN NEWPORT POOL LEAGUE AS
LEADERS BEGIN YEAR WITH WINNING STARTS
NEWPORT (Shropshire): The Stag got the new year off to a good start in the Newport Pool League with a 5-1 demolition of bottom side, Shakespeare B, in Market Drayton.
But LSC at the Tav were involved in a league and cup double-header at the Horns in Gnosall and the league leaders remain a point clear of their rivals after winning the league match, 2-4, and the cup tie, 1-4.
Wayne Baker undid Andy Miles to give the home team a good start in the league contest, but wins for Greg Heathcote, Ben Longstaff and Ant Heathcote over David Jolley, Josh Logan and Jamie Wright made it 1-3. The home team upset Greg Heathcote and Andy Lewis to take the outcome into the final frame, but Ant Heathcote and Ray Talbot sealed the points.
Newport Legion faced a tricky home match with Pheasant B and stormed into a 3-0 lead, courtesy of wins for Simon Walley, Jack Dicken and Jason Taphouse over Luke, Mike and Jack Jones. Scott Smith pulled a rack back against Mick Beech and the away team won frame five to ensure the Legion’s Beech and Dicken had to work hard in the final rack to seal the win.
In-form Shakespeare A entertained the Haberdashers Arms in Upper Bar, extended their unbeaten run to six matches and climbed to fourth in the table. Neil Perkins, Andy Phelan, Russ Woodhouse and Dean Smith won four tight frames against Vicky Winter, Rich Bayliss, Mike Caswell and Trevor Milburn and Simon Holmes replaced Woodhouse in the doubles to seal a somewhat flattering rout.
King’s Head A continued their climb up the table to fifth with a 5-1 win over Gnosall’s Navigation, but Pheasant A were made to work hard for a similar win over King’s Head B. Honours were shared in the contest between the Wheatsheaf and Junction B.
Junction A have had a disappointing start to the season by their standards, but the Norbury side disposed of the Royal Navy Club with the loss of two frames.
The Neil Clark cup match between the Railway Tavern and the Honeysuckle was postponed and illness forced the away team to send a makeshift side for the league game.
But it hardly mattered to the in-form visitors: Marcus Thomas, Mark Groom and Mark Warren were in impressive form and stormed into a 0-3 lead at the expense of Russ Porter, Adam Stone and Jason Lloyd. Greg Quinn pulled the fourth frame back for the home team against Andy Bowsher and Stu Morrey and Quinn made it 2-3 with a doubles win over Warren and Bowsher. But Groom and Thomas produced an impressive final frame to seal both points.
King’s Head A shaded their rearranged local derby match with the B team over the Christmas break, with Phil Emery and Mick Collins shining for the winning side, after Bobby Perry and Lorna Phee had put the B team into a 1-2 lead.
