LSC WIN GRUDGE MATCH AGAINST STAG TO GO TOP OF LEAGUE
NEWPORT (Shropshire): LSC at the Tavern entertained league leaders, the Stag, in a potentially explosive clash between first and second in the Newport Pool League on Wednesday night and gained revenge for a defeat in a recent Market Drayton Pool League fixture.
George Allen was fortunate to edge the opener against Andy Miles to make it 0-1, but Andy Lewis and Greg Heathcote hit back with wins over Mick Hughes and Mick Manning to make it 2-1. In-offs cost Neil Dale dearly in a fourth frame defeat against Ant Heathcote and Greg Heathcote sealed the winning pot in frame five before Allen and Dale won the final consolation rack. LSC at the Tav duly moved a point clear of their rivals at the top of the table.
Newport Legion were made to work hard for a 4-2 win over a spirited Horns side. Welsh wizard Dai Smith got the better of Simon Walley to make it 0-1, but Jack Dicken levelled in a nail-biter with Wayne Baker. J. Jolly again put the visitors in front against Jason Taphouse, but Mick Beech ensured that the match went into the doubles at 2-2. The home side were not to be denied and prevailed in both the doubles racks to seal the points and stay third.
Pheasant B remain fourth after beating the Honeysuckle with the loss of two frames, while the Railway Tavern travelled to the Haberdashers Arms in Knighton and won by a similar 4-2 score line.
Billy Holland upset Rich Bayliss to make it 0-1, but Vicky Winter undressed Adam Stone to level. A bearded Martin Porter made it 1-2 with a win over Paul Degg and Greg Quinn chalked up a rare win over Mike Casewell to make it 1-3. Bayliss and Winter got abreast of the situation and pulled frame five back for the home side, but Porter and a returning Ant Winfield got out of jail and claimed the bragging rights for the away side in the final frame.
Shakespeare A continued their climb up the table to sixth with a scrappy 1-5 away win over the Royal Navy Club. Neil Perkins, Russ Woodhouse and Dean Smith claimed three frames, but a stubborn Alan Pritchett ground debutant Simon Holmes down to win a rack. The away side won two scrappy doubles frames, with Dan Piper making his debut for the home team on a treacherous baize.
The Navigation hosted Junction A in Gnosall and won by the odd frame and Junction B suffered a shocking 0-6 home defeat to Pheasant A in Norbury.
Shakespeare B met the Wheatsheaf and the visitors claimed their first win of the season. Al Harvey, Paul Skitt and Nigel Sandbrook got the better of Barry Smith and Beth and Jess Rigby to make it 0-3 and a win for Kim Rigby over Nigel Hodgskinson in rack four failed to prevent the away side from taking the two points with two doubles wins.
The match between King’s Head A and B was postponed and will be played in fancy dress on Monday, December 29th.
