SMOULDERING STAG ON CUE TO BEAT HORNS AND STAY TOP

NEWPORT (Shropshire): Market Drayton’s Stag were made to work hard to maintain their league lead and claim both points in their sixth fixture of the Newport Pool League at Gnosall’s Horns. But the Horns missed the potting talent of Wayne Baker and only won one frame on their way to a 1-5 defeat.

LSC at the Tav faced a tricky encounter against an under-achieving Pheasant A and emerged with both points. Greg Heathcote and Andy Miles put the home side into a 2-0 lead over Jack Hooper and Ian Swinnerton, but Andy Fishwick kept up fiery Andy Lewis’s miserable run of defeats to make it 2-1. Ant Heathcote got the better of Ant Allen to make it 3-1 and a win in the first doubles rack sealed the points and ‘tipped’ the match in favour of LSC.

Newport Legion maintained the pressure on the leaders with a stunning 6-0 win over the Wheatsheaf, while Pheasant B retained fourth spot with a 4-2 over Knighton’s Haberdashers Arms, despite the fact that Vicky Winter kept abreast of developments with a useful singles’ win.

King’s Head B entertained Shakespeare A at Chetwynd End, with two players from each side who normally play together in the Telford Sunday and Monday leagues locking horns. Honours were shared in the grudge contest: Bob Perry, Lorna Phee and Ian Perry dug deep to win three of the singles racks for the home side and cancel out Andy Phelan’s frame for the away team, but the Shakespeare have an impressive doubles record and secured both frames to seal the draw.

The Navigation hosted the Railway Tavern in Gnosall. Russ Porter played a starring returning role for the visitors in a tense match and won both his singles and doubles rack in the drawn contest. Steve Whitlock, A. Crossley and Neil Holford had put the Gnosall side into a 3-1 lead after the singles frames.

King’s Head A picked up two much needed points with a crushing 0-6 win against bottom side Shakespeare B. Mick Collins, Irene Whittington, Trevor Smith and impressive rookie Alex Davidson did the damage for Collins’s side.

Lowly Royal Navy Club gave a spirited fight against the Honeysuckle in Bellman’s Yard, but the away side won every frame and Junction A pipped their B team in the local derby in Norbury.
