RAILWAY TAVERN OFF THE BOTTOM WITH FIRST POOL WIN

NEWPORT (Shropshire): After a pair of 0-6 whitewashes, the Railway Tavern got off the mark with a narrow 4-2 victory over Shakespeare B in the Newport Pool League.

Barry Smith got the better of Stu Morrey to put the visitors into a shock lead and it needed a good performance by Adam Stone to beat Callum Day to level the match. Greg Quinn made it 2-1 with victory over Jess Rigby, but the match went into the doubles at 2-2 after Kim Rigby beat Dave Bristow.

Jason Lloyd and Stone edged their frame against Smith and Day to make it 3-2 and the two points were confirmed in the final rack when Quinn and Morrey got the better of the Rigby mother and daughter pairing. “We’ve got that monkey off our back now and can move on hopefully,” said a relieved Quinn.

Pheasant A hosted the Stag and the league champions came away with both points with the loss of two frames. Honeysuckle played their first home game of the season and confirmed a second successive win, this time with a 5-1 victory over Junction B.

Shakespeare A remain pointless after a run of three tough early season fixtures against the top four. This time league-leading LSC at the Tav did the damage in a tense match.

Andy Miles got the better of Jonathan Lowe to make it 0-1, only for league newcomer Tom Vernon to edge his rack against Ray Talbot to level the score. Andy Lewis beat Russ Woodhouse to make it 1-2, but Dean Smith continued his run of good form to level against LSC skipper Greg Heathcote. LSC confirmed the win in the two doubles racks.

Newport Legion were made to work hard for a 3-3 draw against Junction A in Norbury. Pheasant B continued their good start to the season with a point from a tight draw at the Wheatsheaf.

The father and son duo of Ian and Bob Perry continue to push King’s Head B to new highs and they were rewarded with a 4-2 win at the Haberdashers Arms. King’s Head A, meanwhile, were beaten by the in-form Horns, with impressive rookie Jordan Clay enjoying his first win for the Gnosall side.

The Navigation got the better of the Royal Navy Club in the final match of the night at Bellman’s Yard. The home side played with just three players and won one consolation frame.
