NORBURY’S JUNCTION A CLAIM NEWPORT PLATE TROPHY
NEWPORT (Shropshire): Norbury’s Junction A followed on from their B team’s success last year to claim the Newport Pool League Plate trophy. They secured the title by getting the better of the Wheatsheaf and that negated the result achieved by Shakespeare A against the Horns in Newport.
Hyla Marklew, Keith Rogers, Steve Roycroft and Gordon Sidebottom did the winning damage for the Norbury side against Nigel Sandbrook, Paul Skitt, Al Harvey and Mark Hodgkinson and there was no way back for the visitors in the doubles.
Shakespeare A surged into a 3-0 lead over the Horns, courtesy of must-win games for Neil Perkins, Jason Taphouse and Andy Wakefield over Martin Holford, Andy White and Kevin Clayge, but Wayne Baker kept the tie open with a win over Ross Richards-Jones. Clayge and Charles Minors sent the tie to a decider by beating Wakefield and Taphouse, but Perkins and Jones rode their luck against Baker and Holford to seal the irrelevant win. Gifting a match away earlier in the season proved very costly for the Shakespeare side.
That was the only award left to settle after another long and successful season of pool in the Newport area, with a record 18 teams taking part in a league season that stretched from the start of November to the end of July. Next year’s league will start on Wednesday, October 29th.
League winners, the Stag, completed their fixtures with a 1-5 win over the Railway Tavern. George Allen, Ricky Leese and Mick Manning disposed of Greg Quinn, Stu Morrey and Jason Lloyd, but Jack Dicken did pull a rack back for the home side against Neil Dale.
Runners-up LSC at the Tavern visited Newport Legion and the home team ended the season with a win. Andy Miles, Colin Farge and Mick Beech stunned the visitors by storming into a 3-0 lead by beating Greg Heathcote, Andy Lewis and Paul Trevor, Stand-in Tim Armstrong fell victim to Ant Heathcote, before Beech and Armstrong sealed the points in the final frame with a win over Ant Heathcote and Trevor.
Third-placed Pheasant A were handed a 6-0 walkover win over previously fifth-placed King’s Head A. Pheasant B got the better of King’s Head B, 4-2, and the Navigation finished their league campaign with a 5-1 win over Junction B.
Haberdashers Arms ended their season strongly and finished third in the Newport Plate after beating Shakespeare B without losing a frame. Royal Navy Veterans were handed a walkover win over the Royal Navy Seals.
The annual Newport Pool League prize giving and get together to discuss issues regarding next year’s league will take place at the Shakespeare from 20.30hrs on Wednesday evening (August 6).
The Newport Pool League winners’ awards, Dennis Holland Memorial runner-up shield, Newport Plate Trophy and Desert England award will all be presented. Everyone is welcome to attend.
