STAG MOVE TO WITHIN ONE VICTORY OF NEWPORT POOL LEAGUE

NEWPORT (Shropshire): Market Drayton’s Stag moved to within two points of winning the Newport Pool League for the first time after disposing of Knighton’s Haberdashers Arms without the loss of a single frame. Kyle Smith made his debut for the winning side.

The Drayton side head into the final three games of the season with a four-point lead and a vastly superior frame difference over LSC at the Tav. Their rivals refuse to lie down, however, and a 5-1 victory over Plate-chasing Junction B kept them in the hunt for the runner-up spot and the new Dennis Holland Shield.

Pheasant A moved to within three points of securing third place with a 4-2 win over the Railway Tavern.

Newport Legion faced a tricky encounter at the Horns in Gnosall and managed to win the match with the loss of just one frame. After Wayne Baker had beaten Colin Farge, Wayne Dodd, Mick Beech and Andy Miles redressed the balance for the Legion and the quartet prevailed in the doubles frames.

King’s Head A got the better of Shakespeare A at Chetwynd End to dent the visitors’ Plate title ambitions and Junction A took full advantage to snatch top spot in the Plate with a 4-2 win over King’s Head B.

The Royal Navy Veterans got the better of the Wheatsheaf, 2-4, but the result of the match between the Pheasant B and Shakespeare B in Upper Bar had been sent by passenger pigeon as we closed for press.

The game between the Royal Navy Seals and the Navigation was postponed because of a private function at the Bellman’s Yard venue.
