STAG CRUSH LEGION TO STROLL TOWARDS MAIDEN POOL TITLE

NEWPORT (Shropshire): Market Drayton’s Stag faced their stiffest remaining test if they were to secure the Newport Pool League title with a visit to third-placed Newport Legion.

They could afford a defeat to their bitter rivals and still take the title, but that was not on the cards for George Allen, Mick Manning, Ricky Leese and Neil Dale and the Drayton side won the match with the loss of two frames.

LSC at the Tav needed to keep up the pressure on the Drayton side with a convincing victory at King’s Head B, but still look set to be bridesmaids for the second time in three years.

Pheasant A remain on track for third after getting the better of Shakespeare A in Upper Bar with the loss of just one frame. Matt Mansell, Ian Swinnerton, Jack Hooper and Ant Allen won four very different frames to put the away side into a 0-4 lead, but Ross Richards-Jones and Neil Perkins pulled a consolation frame back for the home team in the first of the doubles racks.

King’s Head A remain firmly entrenched in fifth position after cruising to a 1-5 win at the Royal Navy Veterans.

The bragging rights in the all-Gnosall clash between the Navigation and the Horns fell to the Horns. Dai Smith, Wayne Baker and Martyn Halford put the away team into a 0-3 lead and a win in one of the doubles frames was enough to seal the two points.

The Railway Tavern were upstaged by Junction A in Newport and the Norbury side stormed into contention for the Newport Plate Trophy. Hyla Marklew, Keith Rogers and Sion Richards put the away team into a 0-3 lead with wins over Stu Morrey, Greg Quinn and Adam Stone and, even though Jack Dicken pulled frame four back against Steve Roycroft, the away side prevailed in the doubles, with Gordon Sidebottom joining the action in frame five.

Defending Newport Plate winners Junction B did their chances of regaining the title considerable damage after drawing with Shakespeare B in Norbury. The Staffordshire side now trail Shakespeare A by two points with eight on offer, although they have a vastly inferior frame difference. .

Barry Smith and Jane Hilditch put the away side into a 0-2 lead with wins over Frank James and Steve Purves, but Ryan Morris came to the rescue in rack three to beat Jess Hilditch and make it 1-2. Kim Rigby ousted Stu Till to make to 1-3, but the ‘canalsiders’ hit back to win both doubles racks and seal the draw.

The Wheatsheaf travelled to the Haberdashers Arms in Knighton and were humiliated by the in-form village side. “They came here, chalked their cues and then went home with their tails between their legs,” whooped delighted Haberdashers’ player Vicky Winter.

Pheasant B were handed a walkover 6-0 win against the absent Royal Navy Seals.
