POOL LEAGUE MOURNS PASSING OF A LEAGUE
FAVOURITE AS STAG EDGES TOWARDS TITLE

NEWPORT (Shropshire): Market Drayton’s Stag closed to within five points of the Newport Pool League title with a potential 10 remaining after disposing of Gnosall’s Navigation, 5-1, on Wednesday evening.

Nearest rivals LSC at the Tav cruised to a 0-6 victory of their own at Shakespeare B, but are now relying on the Drayton side losing two games and drawing one of their last five to have any chance of taking the title.

The Newport Pool League fraternity was stunned this week by the news of the untimely death of Dennis Holland, a long-time player for the Royal Navy Club Veterans, after a recent illness. His sense of humour and sporting conduct made him one of the most popular players in the league. Everyone concerned with the Newport Pool League send their profound condolences to his friends and family.

Dennis’s former team visited Pheasant A on Wednesday evening and went down to a thumping 6-0 defeat. Ian Swinnerton, Colin Smith, Matt Mansell and Jack Hooper got the better of Dean Smith, Gerry Nunn, Alan Pritchett and Jez Price to make it 4-0, with Swinnerton bringing an end to Smith’s 10-match unbeaten singles’ run. Antony Allan joined the rout in the doubles for the home side.

Newport Legion kept up their fight for third place with a high-spirited 5-1 victory at the Wheatsheaf. Andy Miles eight-balled Nigel Sandbrook off the break to make it 0-1, Colin Farge ousted Mark Hodgkinson to make it two and Mick Beech got the better of Al Harvey to put the Legion into a 0-3 lead. Wayne Dodd sealed the two points with a win over Paul Skitt, although Beech potted the white and the black in a final frame clearance to give the raucous and delighted home side a consolation frame.

Newport Plate-leading Shakespeare A visited Junction A without two regular players and managed to snatch a 3-3 draw against their potential end-of-season rivals.

This could have opened the door for the Royal Navy Seals to snatch the Plate lead, but they failed to turn up for the fixture against Junction B in Bellman’s Yard and were also penalised two extra two points for their absence.

Horns B beat Pheasant B, 5-1, in the final match of the evening to climb above their rivals and into sixth place. Dai Smith, Wayne Baker and Martyn Holford helped themselves to a frame apiece and the Gnosall side also won both singles racks.

The Railway Tavern played King’s Head B and the King’s A team entertained Knighton’s Haberdashers Arms, but neither result was available as we closed for press.
