STAG TAKE CRUCIAL STEP TOWARDS POOL TITLE WITH LSC WIN
NEWPORT (Shropshire): The potential Newport Pool League deciding match went in favour of the Stag after a thrilling showdown between the Market Drayton side and LSC at the Tav on Wednesday night. The result means that the North Shropshire side take a three-point advantage and a superior frame difference into the remaining eight matches of the season.
Andy Lewis narrowly lost out to George Allen in the opening frame and Paul Trevor was also unfortunate not to beat Ricky Leese, as the Drayton team edged into a 0-2 advantage. Greg Heathcote also had his chances to beat Mick Manning, but brother Ant Heathcote came to the table with his side 0-3 down. He managed to beat Neil Dale to make it 1-3 and give the home team a lifeline.
The fifth frame could have gone either way, but Manning prevailed to make it 1-4 and Allen and Dale made no mistake in the sixth rack to seal the vital win.
Pheasant A could not take advantage of the meeting between the top two to move back into contention and they squandered a 0-3 lead to draw with the Navigation in Gnosall.
Newport Legion still have one eye on third place and they did their cause no harm at all with a 5-1 win over Newport Plate-chasing Junction A. Andy Miles, Colin Farge and Mick Beech stormed into a 3-0 lead with wins over Hyla Marklew, Keith Rogers and Steve Roycroft. The Legion sealed the win in frame four, although Sion Richards and Roycroft did pull the fifth frame back for the visitors.
Sixth met fifth in the clash between Pheasant B and King’s Head A in Upper Bar and honours were shared. After Mick Collins had beaten Simon Walley to make it 0-1, Mike Jones redressed the balance with a win over Edd Keenan. Luke Jones smashed Irene Whittington to make it 2-1, only for Dan Owen to level against Liam Matthews. Walley and Matthews made it 3-2 to the home side and Collins and Owen confirmed the draw in frame six.
Shakespeare A maintained a slender lead in the Newport Plate after drawing with the Royal Navy Club Veterans. Andy Wakefield and Neil Perkins put the visitors into a 0-2 lead with wins over Mark Kijuk and Jez Price, but Dean Smith secured his ninth successive singles’ win – this time against Dave Marshall – to make it 1-2 and Alan Pritchett pipped Ross Richards-Jones to level. Honours were shared in the doubles frames; Pritchett cleared well in the final frame alongside Smith to edge the rack against the Shake’s Wakefield and Marshall to seal a point.
The Horns remain seventh after being held to a 3-3 draw by bottom side Shakespeare B. The home team stormed into a 2-0 lead after Barry Smith and Jess Hilditch had got the better of Wayne Baker and Jim Haywood, but Dai Smith and Martyn Halford levelled with wins over Jane Hilditch and Kim Rigby and a doubles frame went to both sides.
Junction B did their chances of retaining the Newport Plate title no harm at all with a 3-3 draw against the Wheatsheaf in Norbury and honours were also shared between the Haberdashers Arms and the Railway Tavern in Knighton.
Royal Navy Seals failed to show for their match against King’s Head B at Chetwynd End.
