STAG AND LSC PULL AWAY AS PHEASANT A CRASH AT HOME
NEWPORT (Shropshire): There is status quo at the top of the Newport Pool League with nine matches remaining after Market Drayton’s Stag and LSC at the Tav both won their respective matches against Shakespeare B and the Wheatsheaf to remain out in front.
The Stag have a point advantage and a superior frame difference and that was made even better after their demolition of Shakespeare B in Market Drayton. Visiting the ‘Sheaf is never easy, but LSC held their nerve on a tricky cloth to earn both points. Third-placed Pheasant A crashed out to their B team in Upper Bar and slipped four points behind the league leaders.
Newport Legion may well have left it too late to push for the top three but they played out a 0-6 thrashing of the Railway Tavern in Newport. Mick Beech beat birthday boy Greg Quinn to make it 0-1 and Colin Farge, Wayne Dodd and Darren Pountney made it 0-4 against Jason Lloyd, David Bristow and Adam Stone. There was no respite in the doubles either on a humiliating night for the home side.
Lowly Shakespeare A faced a tricky home encounter against the Haberdashers Arms, but the in-form side secured a third 6-0 win in four weeks to move to the top of the Newport Plate League on frame difference. Jason Taphouse, Andy Wakefield, Neil Perkins and Dave Marshall got the better of Rich Bayliss, Paul Degg, Steve Roberts and Mike Casewell in the singles and Ross-Richards Jones joined the action for the home side in the doubles to seal the rout.
King’s Head A followed up last week’s bitter hammering with a shock 2-4 home defeat to Junction B. Steve Purves got the better of Irene Whittington to make it 0-1 and Mick Ashforth rode his luck against Ed Keenan to make it 0-2.
Young Conor Keenan flew the King’s flag with pride to beat Stu Till and make it 1-2, but Ian Whittington lost out to Ryan Morris and it was 1-3 to the Norbury side. Conor Keenan again featured in the shared doubles racks, but the Junction held on to seal the win.
The Horns entertained the Royal Navy Seals in Gnosall and the match was drawn with the Seals slipping to second in the Newport Numpty League. Neil Holmes, Dai Smith and Martyn Holford had put the home team into a 3-0 lead. Junction A were thrashed 0-6 by the Navigation in the all-Staffordshire clash.
The Royal Navy Veterans continued their run of good form with a 4-2 victory over King’s Head B. Mark Kijuk got the better of Lucy Hennessey to make it 1-0 and Dean Smith won his eighth successive singles’ frames – this time against Lorna Phee – to make it 2-0. Chris Perry pulled a frame back for the visitors against Gerry Nunn, but Allen Pritchett beat Lynn Day to make it 3-1 and honours were shared in the doubles.
