WHITEWASH WINS FOR STAG AND LSC IN NEWPORT POOL LEAGUE

NEWPORT (Shropshire): Market Drayton’s Stag retained top spot in the Newport Pool League for the second week after beating Royal Navy Seals, 0-6, at Bellman’s Yard.

LSC at the Tav kept up the pressure with a thumping 6-0 victory over the King’s Head A and Pheasant A stayed in the hunt after edging the match against Junction B in Norbury with the loss of one frame.

Wins for Greg Heathcote, Andy Lewis, Paul Trevor and Ant Heathcote over Mick Collins, Irene Whittington, Dan Owen and Ed Keenan stunned the visitors at LSC and there were to be no consolation frames in the doubles.

Newport Legion entertained Shakespeare A – the first team to take a point from them this season – who turned up with four regular players missing. Ross Richards-Jones shocked Wayne Dodd to make it 0-1, but Andy Miles, Mick Beech and Ben Brookes saw off Andy Wakefield, former Shake landlord Ben Holmes and team debutant Jo Phillips to make it 3-1 and the doubles frames went to the home side as well.

Pheasant B were beaten at home by the odd frame by Junction A. Hyla Markley edged a tight opener against Simon Walley to make it 0-1, but Mike Jones levelled with a win over Keith Rogers. Frames three and four fell to away players Sion Richards and Steve Roycroft and, even though Walley and Luke Jones prevailed to make it 3-2 in rack five, the Junction sealed both points in the final frame.

Gnosall’s Horns cruised passed King’s Head B at Chetwynd End, with Wayne Baker and Dai Smith setting the visitors on their way. Martyn Holford made it 0-3, but Lucy Hennessey got the better of Charles Minors to pull a frame back for the home side. The Horns won both doubles frames to secure the win.

Haberdashers fought out a draw with the Royal Navy Veterans. Steve Roberts put the home team into the lead against Mark Kijuk, only for Dean Smith to continue his winning ‘streak’ to level against Mike Caswell. Paul Degg and Vicky Winter made it 3-1 to the Knighton massive by taking out Gerry Nunn and Allen Pritchett, but the veterans dug deep and a plucky fight back gave them both doubles frames and a good draw.

The Navigation were soundly beaten at home in the mid-table clash by the Railway Tavern. Jason Lloyd, Adam Stone, Jack Dicken and Stu Morrey made it 0-4 with wins over A. Crossley, T. Garvey, Scott Smith and Neil Holford and the home team pulled the fifth frame back when Greg Quinn entered the fray for the visitors.

Wheatsheaf’s result at Shakespeare B was not available as we closed for press.
