MAKESHIFT SHAKE A SIDE STUN LSC AS STAG ROMP TO WIN
NEWPORT (Shropshire): LSC at the Tavern were held to a shock 3-3 home draw by a makeshift Shakespeare A side and saw their lead at the top of the Newport Pool League trimmed to just a point after Market Drayton’s Stag beat King’s Head A with the loss of two frames.
Shake skipper Andy Potter had told LSC that he only had two players available for the fixture with three regulars missing but, such is the popularity of pool in Newport, Jason Taphouse and Steve Morrey volunteered to play, as they had not played for another team this season.
LSC skipper Greg Heathcote was fortunate to beat Morrey to make it 1-0, but Potter struck back against Andy Lewis to level. Paul Trevor beat Taphouse to make it 2-1, but promising Shake youngster Andy Wakefield held his cool to level again against Ant Heathcote. Greg Heathcote and Lewis made it 3-2 against Wakefield and Morrey, but Potter and Taphouse sealed the draw by beating Trevor and Ant Heathcote.
The Stag were made to work hard for a 4-2 victory over King’s Head A, who had been the only team to lose just one match beforehand. A George Allen eight-ball clearance was the highlight for the home side.
Pheasant A needed a good result at the Horns to put them back into contention after a couple of poor performances, but the match ended all square.
The Navigation hosted Newport Legion in Gnosall and the match was level after the singles and it remained that way after the doubles. Neil Holford and Steve Whitlock beat Andy Miles and Mick Beech for the Staffordshire side, but Beech and Steve Speake won their doubles rack against Whitlock and Holford to guarantee the draw after Wayne Dodd had played well for the Legion in his singles.
Junction B were held to a 3-3 draw by a three-man Royal Navy Veterans team. Mark Kijuk rode his luck for the away side to beat Frank James and Dean Smith cruised passed Stu Till to make it 0-2. Ryan Morris was fortunate to beat Alan Pritchett and make it 1-2 and the Junction claimed the next two frames to make it 3-2. But Kijuk and Pritchett played well in rack six against James and Steve Purvis to seal the draw.
Shakespeare B went down to a thumping 0-6 defeat to the Railway Tavern. Greg Quinn, Stu Morrey, Jason Lloyd and Adam Stone stormed past Jess Hilditch, Barry Smith, Jane Hilditch and Kim Rigby to make it 0-4 and there was no turnaround for the Shakespeare’s fortunes in the doubles.
Pheasant B were held to a 3-3 draw by the Haberdashers. Simon Walley and Mike Jones put the home side in front with wins over Mike Casewell and Dave Heeley, but the improving villagers hit back and Steve Roberts and Rich Bayliss levelled against Luke Jones and Liam Matthews. Casewell and Heeley exacted revenge by beating Mike Jones and Tom Sayce in rack five, but Walley played a captain’s innings alongside Luke Jones to confirm the draw in frame six.
Royal Navy Seals faced a tricky home clash against Junction A for early dominance in the League Plate standings and they gained another two points with a 2-4 win. Lowly King’s Head B stunned the Wheatsheaf with an unlikely 5-1 victory in the final game of the evening at Chetwynd End.
