RAMPANT LSC AT THE TAV OVERCOME PHEASANT TO STAY CLEAR
NEWPORT (Shropshire): LSC at the Tav overcame a potentially tricky encounter with the Pheasant B to remain out front in the Newport & District Pool League.
The league leaders dropped just one frame in a dominant performance, which started when in-form skipper Greg Heathcote seven-balled a hapless Simon Walley off the break. Mike Jones escaped from a snooker to pip Andy Lewis to level the match, but that was as good as it got for the visitors.
Ant Heathcote made a good clearance to beat Luke Jones, Paul Trevor benefited from a Tom Sayce black ball miss to make it 3-1 and LSC secured both doubles racks to draw the curtain on the evening after a nervy Walley fluffed his sole visit to the table in rack six after Ant Heathcote had given him at least one shot by missing the black.
Pheasant A remain second, but they slipped one point behind LSC after being held to a tense 3-3 draw by Junction A,
Market Drayton’s Stag have found some form in recent weeks and their stunning 6-0 victory over the Royal Navy Veterans ensures that they remain firmly in contention for the title in third place. The highlight of the night occurred when visiting player and last year’s league-winning captain Dean Smith arrived at the venue with an empty case after forgetting his cue!
King’s Head A produced the performance of the night to thrash the Railway Tavern without dropping a frame. They remain fourth after singles wins for Mick Collins, Irene Whittington, Dan Owen and Ed Keenan over Jason Lloyd, Greg Quinn, Adam Stone and Stu Morrey preceded two further doubles frame wins.
Newport Legion whitewashed the AWOL Royal Navy Seals on their way to two much needed points. The non-appearance of the Seals to their home match in favour of watching the England football game also earned them a second two-point deduction of the season for missing a fixture.
The Wheatsheaf were soundly beaten, 1-5, by an improving Shakespeare A in Chetwynd Aston. Dave Marshall was the only away player to lose a frame in a match where the ‘Sheaf’s Nigel Hodgkinson suffered the ignominy of potting the black out of turn in rack six, much to the amusement of the benefiting Andy Potter and Ross Richards-Jones.
The Navigation remain the best of the rest in eighth after beating lowly Shakespeare B with the loss of one frame.
Junction B suffered a shock home defeat to lowly King’s Head B, who duly confirmed their second win of the season and closed to within a point of the Royal Navy Veterans at the foot of the table.
Horns were held to a 3-3 draw by a spirited Haberdashers Arms in Gnosall.
