TOP TWO MARCH ON AS NEWPORT LEGION FALL TO THE STAG
NEWPORT (Shropshire): The top two maintained their advantage over the chasing pack after the 13th week of matches in the Newport & District Pool League.
Better weather conditions ensured that all nine fixtures went ahead and leaders LSC at the Tav made light work of disposing of King’s Head B with the loss of just one frame. The match was over in 55 minutes, with Greg Heathcote, Paul Cartledge, Andy Lewis and Ant Heathcote beating Jamie James, Lyn Day, Lorna Phee and Lucy Hennessey to make it 4-0, although the visitors did win a consolation doubles frame.
Pheasant A continue to trail them on frame difference after getting the better of Shakespeare A without the loss of a single frame.
The match of the night featured the clash between third and fourth in Market Drayton, but it failed to live up to expectations. The Newport Legion side were hopelessly outclassed by the Stag, a result that all but ends NRBL’s chances of winning anything this season and was soured by an unsavoury bout of poor sportsmanship by one of the visiting players in a doubles rack.
King’s Head A took full advantage and climbed from fifth to fourth with a thumping 6-0 victory over the Royal Navy Veterans. Mick Collins took just two minutes to dispose of Dean Smith, Ed Keenan got the better of Gerry Nunn and Irene Whittington kept up the winning streak with success over Alan Pritchett. Ross Goodchild sealed the points against Mark Kijuk and both doubles racks went in favour of the home side.
Royal Navy Seals hosted Pheasant B in Bellman’s Yard and lost all four singles racks and one of the doubles frames. Simon Walley, Mike and Luke Jones and Tom Sayce got the better of Gary Bolton, Ray Talbot, Martin Porter and Ben Longstaff to seal the points, although Talbot and Porter pulled a consolation frame back for the Seals in rack five.
Junction A and Railway Tavern fought out a tight affair in Norbury and honours went to the Newport side. They found themselves 1-3 ahead after singles wins for Jack Dicken, Greg Quinn and Adam Stone had cancelled out Jason Lloyd’s second rack defeat. Stone and a returning skipper Stu Morrey sealed the win in frame five.
Horns and Navigation met in the mid-table clash in Gnosall and there was no separating the two teams. Junction B also shared a point with Shakespeare B in Upper Bar and the Wheatsheaf were made to work hard for a draw with the Haberdashers Arms.
