ROYAL NAVY VETS STUN JUNCTION A IN NEWPORT POOL LEAGUE
NEWPORT (Shropshire): The Royal Navy Veterans never take pool too seriously but the team with an average age of around 70 years produced one of the upsets of the season with a stunning win over Junction A in Norbury.
New signing Dean Smith set the visitors on the way with a good win over Hyla Marklew, only for Sion Richards to level the score against Dennis Holland. Gerry Nunn may well be the oldest player in the entire league, but he dug deep to oust Steve Roycroft and set the away side on the way to a famous win.
Gordon Sidebottom levelled the match with a win over Alan Pritchett, but the Vets were not to be denied. Mark Kijuk and Holland left-footed Marklew and Roycroft to make it 2-3 and Smith and Pritchett teamed up to snatch the win from Richards and Sidebottom to give the Veterans two wins on the bounce.
LSC at the Tav and Pheasant A continue to top the Newport & District Pool League after winning their respective week 11 matches against Royal Navy Club Seals and the Haberdashers Arms.
Both games finished 5-1 to the table-toppers, with the Pheasant getting the better of Knighton’s Haberdashers.
Paul Cartledge, John Williams, Paul Trevor and Ant Heathcote did the damage in the singles frames for LSC against Gary Bolton, Ray Talbot, Ben Longstaff and Kim Wan Loi and, although the home team pulled a frame back in rack five, Williams and Ant Heathcote sealed the rout.
Newport Legion have been in a run of poor form and the last thing last year’s runners-up wanted was a trip to the King’s Head, but they managed to sneak a draw in a tense match. Mick Collins and Ross Goodchild shone for the home team.
The Stag took full advantage of their rivals’ meeting to outwit Pheasant B in Market Drayton with the loss of one frame. George Allen got the better of Simon Walley to make it 1-0 and, even though Mike Jones pipped Ricky Leese to level the match, the Stag won the next four frames to seal both points.
Horns drew with Junction B. Wayne Baker missed out on a seven-ball clearance after potting the white against Steve Purvis and the visitors went 0-1 up. Neil Holmes restored parity against Mick Ashforth and Dave Jolley made it 2-1 with a win over Stu Till. Ryan Morris levelled the match by beating Dai Smith and the doubles racks were shared.
The Railway Tavern beat a disillusioned Shakespeare A side at Upper Bar. Missed pots and silly fouls cost the visitors dearly and a solitary singles win for Dave Marshall was cancelled out by wins for Tavern players Greg Quinn, Jack Dicken and Jason Lloyd.
A foul by Marshall cost him and Andy Phelan a good chance to make it 3-2 against Quinn and Dave Bristow and a petulant Perkins threw away the dead rubber final frame after mis-cueing trying to whack in a double in frustration after Ross Richards-Jones had numptied a straight black.
Wheatsheaf fought out a mid-table clash with the Navigation in Chetwynd Aston and were beaten by the odd frame. Nigel Sandbrook put the home team one up against Bethan Kinnersley, but J. Cheal levelled by beating Al Harvey. The visitors won the next two racks and, despite Sandbrook and J. Shelton winning rack five, it was curtains for the home team in the final frame.
The bottom two met at the Shakespeare and King’s Head B managed to scramble a draw, despite Russ Woodhouse beating Ian Perry to put the home team 1-0 up and on their way to a first point this season.
