LSC AND PHEASANT A STORM TO TOP OF NEWPORT POOL LEAGUE

NEWPORT (Shropshire): LSC at the Tav are the new outright leaders of the Newport Pool League after completing an excellent 2-4 victory at the Stag in Market Drayton.

Greg Heathcote’s crucial win over George Allen set the ball rolling for the visitors, only for Newport Open champion Ricky Leece to beat the first ever Newport Open champion Paul Trevor in frame two. Ant Heathcote got the better of Mick Manning to put the Newport side back in front and Neil Dale levelled against Andy Lewis. Both doubles racks fell to the away team to confirm a memorable win.

Junction A stunned Newport Legion in Norbury and won the match in the singles racks with Hyla Marklew, Keith Rogers, Steve Roycroft and Sion Richards taking the frames to seal the points. A shell-shocked Legion won both the doubles frames, courtesy of Mick Beech, Colin Farge, Andy Miles and Wayne Dodd.

Pheasant A benefited from the Stag’s and Legion’s demise to climb into second with a 4-2 win over the Navigation. The teams are level on points, but LSC take top spot on frame difference. King’s Head A got the better of the fifth versus clash against Pheasant B by the odd frame.

Horns ensured that Shakespeare B’s winless streak continued with a 5-1 victory in Gnosall. Wayne Baker, David Jolley and Martyn Holford won three of the singles racks, but a fine win for Jess Hilditch over the Welsh wizard Dai Smith ensured that the match would go to the doubles.

Railway Tavern won the mid-table clash, 4-2, against Haberdashers and the Wheatsheaf thrashed Junction B, 5-1, in Chetwynd Aston. Jack Dicken, Adam Stone and Stu Morrey put the Tavern in the driving seat in the singles, only for Dave Heeley to beat Greg Quinn. Honours were shared in the doubles.

Shakespeare A bounced back from a woeful showing in Knighton last week to beat the Royal Navy Veterans in Upper Bar, 4-2. A pair of wins for Alan Pritchett in the singles and doubles for the Navy Veterans was not enough to cancel out singles wins for Ross Richards-Jones, Andy Wakefield and Andy Potter.

Royal Navy Seals got the better of lowly King’s Head B with the loss of one frame.
