TOP THREE START NEW YEAR WITH
WINS IN NEWPORT POOL LEAGUE

NEWPORT (Shropshire): Newport Legion maintained a slender lead at the top of the Newport & District Pool League after thrashing the Railway Tavern 6-0 in week eight of the new season.

Andy Miles, Colin Farge, Mick Beech and Wayne Dodd did the damage against Greg Quinn, Adam Stone, Stu Morrey and Jack Dicken in the singles and it was a case of ‘Taxi for the Tav’ in the doubles, as the Legion quartet sealed the rout.

In what is developing into the closest title race for several years, Market Drayton’s Stag came away from Shakespeare B with both points to retain second place after a similar 0-6 whitewash. George Allen, Mick Manning, Ricky Leese and Neil Dale won the four singles racks and followed up with wins in the doubles frames.

LSC at the Tav had ruined King’s Head A’s unbeaten record in a rearranged pre-New Year match and they kept up the good form with a tense 4-2 win over the Wheatsheaf to retain third place.

Nigel Sandbrook stunned Greg Heathcote to put the away side into the lead, but singles wins for Andy Lewis, Paul Trevor and Ant Heathcote redressed the balance against Al Harvey, J. Shelton and Paul Skitt. Sandbrook and Shelton took the match to a tense decider by beating G. Heathcote and Lewis to make it 3-2, but A. Heathcote and Trevor held their nerve to seal both points.

Fourth met fifth in the all-Pheasant clash on Upper Bar and the A team snatched both points in a tense 2-4 score line, while King’s Head A stayed in contention for a top five finish despite being held to a 3-3 draw by a stubborn Junction B.

Honours fell to Junction A by the odd frame in the all-Staffordshire clash between the Norbury side and the Navigation in Gnosall, the home team missing Scott Smith who has moved to Newport and is missing the rest of the season.

Royal Navy Seals hosted the Horns in a mid-table clash in Bellman’s Yard and honours were shared before the two teams went on to play out their Neil Clark Memorial Trophy preliminary match.

Both points in the bottom of the table clash between King’s Head B and Royal Navy Veterans went to the Chetwynd End side, despite the fact that the veterans’ new signing Dean Smith got the better of Ian Perry. Lorna Phee had beaten Dennis Holland before that and the King’s Head B side responded from the 1-1 score line to win every other frame.

The Haberdashers hosted Shakespeare A in Knighton and inflicted another miserable defeat on the visitors. Dave Marshall gifted the opener to James Morris, although Andy Potter redressed the balance to level against Vicky Winter. Missing two shots on a straightforward black is never going to work and Neil Perkins’s blunder paved the way for Rich Bayliss to make it 2-1.

Andy Wakefield also fell at the final hurdle to hand his frame to a determined Dave Heeley and the writing was on the wall. ‘Dashers debutant Paul Degg played well in his rack with Heeley and, when Perkins ‘numptied’ the black again alongside Ross Richards-Jones, the home team sealed the points. Potter and Marshall survived the ‘dead rubber’ final frame against Mike Casewell and Steve Roberts, but the home side had confirmed a well-earned win.
