TOP TWO GO MARCHING ON IN NEWPORT POOL LEAGUE
NEWPORT (Shropshire): LSC at the Tav and Newport Legion kept up their unbeaten starts to the Newport Pool League season with away wins at Junction A and the Haberdashers Arms.
Greg Heathcote, Paul Cartledge, Andy Lewis and Ant Heathcote ran riot against Hyla Marklew, Keith Rogers, Steve Roycroft and Sion Richards to seal the points for LSC in the singles racks, although Rogers and an inspired Gordon Sidebottom sealed a consolation frame for the home side in rack five.
Andy Miles, Paul Lucas, Ken Dodd and Mick Beech achieved a similar 4-0 advantage against James Morris, Dave Heeley, an unlucky Vicky Winters and Rich Bayliss to put NRBL 4-0 to the good, but Miles and Lucas succumbed in the doubles as the home team sealed a consolation frame.
Market Drayton’s Stag and King’s Head A maintained the pressure on the leading duo with victories over King’s Head B and the Royal Navy Seals. The Stag completed a whitewash against King’s Head B, but the Chetwynd End A team had to work a little harder to beat the Seals.
Mick Collins silenced Ben Longstaff with a useful clearance to make it 1-0, Ed Keenan got the better of Gary Bolton to make it 2-0, but an inspired Ray Talbot pulled a frame back against Irene Whittington. Ross Goodchild pipped Ant Winfield in a potting race to make it 3-1 and, after Talbot and Martin Porter had made it 3-2, Dan Owen joined Goodchild to beat Kim Wan Loi and Bolton to seal the win.
Pheasant A kept up their impressive start to the season with a 5-1 win over Shakespeare B – Darren Lowe’s fortunate debut win over Matt Mansell was the only high point for the struggling Shake side.
The Pheasant B team travelled 25 yards along Upper Bar to take on Shakespeare A and they inflicted the home A team with a humiliating 0-6 defeat, courtesy of singles wins for Simon Walley, Mike Jones, Paul Parton and Liam Matthews and a pair of tense doubles frame wins.
Gnosall’s Navigation clinched their third win in five starts against the Royal Navy Veterans with the loss of just one frame, while Gnosall’s Horns travelled to Chetwynd Aston to play the Wheatsheaf and emerged with both points after a 2-4 win.
The Railway Tavern hosted Junction B and were stunned by the visitors, who sealed the two points with a final frame win over Adam Stone and Greg Quinn.
