KING’S HEAD A STUN DRAYTON’S STAG IN POOL LEAGUE

NEWPORT (Shropshire): The Stag faced a potentially tricky clash away at the King’s Head on night three of the Newport & District Pool League and the title favourites were soundly beaten by a resurgent home side.

Graham Tigwell, Phil Emery and new signing Dan Owen made it 3-0 to the King’s with wins over George Allen, Mick Manning and Ricky Leese, only for S. Keay to pull a frame back for the Market Drayton side against Irene Whittington. Allen and Leese set up a tense finale by winning frame five, but Emery and Ross Goodchild sealed the points for the home team in a barnstorming finish.

Newport Legion kept up the pressure with a 5-1 home win over Gnosall’s Navigation and LSC at the Tav snatched all three points in a tense 2-4 victory at Shakespeare A to maintain their winning start to the season.

Andy Miles, Wayne Dodd, Mick Beech and Colin Farge secured all four singles racks for NRBL to earn the win, but Navigation’s Scott Smith played well in his doubles rack to make a five-ball clearance and pull a frame back for the visitors.

LSC had to work much harder. Skipper Greg Heathcote got the better of Andy Wakefield to put the away side 0-1 ahead, but Andy Potter’s great escape from a snooker put him on the way to an unlikely frame win over Paul Cartledge and Andy Phelan pipped Andy Lewis to make it 2-1 to the home team.

Ant Heathcote held on to level the match against Dave Marshall and the visitors won both doubles racks, the win being secured in the final frame when Potter cruelly knocked the yellow and black into a pocket at the same time in a cruel twist.

The Railway Tavern is the fourth unbeaten team after beating Shakespeare B with the loss of one rack. Jack Dicken, Adam Stone, Stu Morrey and Greg Quinn won their singles racks and Stone teamed up with Jason Lloyd to make it 5-0.

Pheasant A entertained Gnosall’s Horns and won the match, 4-2, while Pheasant B sealed both points in a similar 2-4 away win at the Haberdashers Arms.

Junction B got the better of the Royal Navy Veterans in Bellman’s Yard and the Wheatsheaf earned their first win of the season against King’s Head B with the loss of just one frame.

The Royal Navy Seals faced a tricky match at Junction A, but the result had not been received as we closed for press.
