HORNS B CLAIM THEIR FIRST NEWPORT POOL LEAGUE TITLE

· Newport Plate Trophy win for Norbury’s Junction B

NEWPORT (Shropshire): Horns Gnosall B ended their Newport Pool League campaign with a 5-1 victory over their B team in Gnosall to cap a superb season which saw them unbeaten in 34 league matches on the way to a maiden title.

Under eccentric skipper Dean Smith, Market Drayton’s George Allen and Mick Manning, Stafford’s Neil Dale and Hinstock’s Colin Pink were models of consistency over the course of a long season and three of them won their final singles frames in style to clinch the win. Allen’s frame success also confirmed that he was the top player in the entire league in terms of averages after 25 games played and he wins the ‘Yakmeister Trophy’.

“No-one believed me when I said we had a squad to win the league at the first attempt,” said Smith, who hopes to move his winning team to the Pheasant in Newport in October. “The regular hecklers wrote us off, but I had faith in my team from the start and never once thought that we would lose this title. Curtains.”

NRBL A came up just short after a brave defence of their title. They won the same amount of games as the Horns, but draws cost them dearly and they finished the season two points and several frames behind their rivals, despite winning their final match, 6-0, against King’s Head B.

LSC at the Tavern were forced to work hard for a 3-3 draw with the Sutherland Arms at the Honeysuckle and that was sufficient for the Neil Clark Memorial Cup winners to finish third in the league. John Williams, Paul Cartledge and Paul Trevor blotted their copybooks, but they still managed to seal third place.

NRBL B needed to beat King’s Head A to have a chance of third position and they managed to come back from 3-1 down to seal a draw. Simon Walley put them into a one nil lead after beating Graham Tigwell, but wins for Irene Whittington, Ross Goodchild and Ed Keenan turned the game around. Liam Matthews joined the visitors in the doubles and they managed to eke out the draw.

Shakespeare A finished their league campaign with their first 6-0 win of the campaign over the Royal Navy Club to claim seventh place. Richard Hendy, Neil Perkins, Dave Marshall and Ross Richards-Jones won the singles racks and Andy Potter and Ben Holmes joined the party in the doubles.

The Railway Tavern needed to beat the Barley Mow to stand any chance of winning the inaugural Newport Plate trophy, but it was not to be. Billy Holland and Gary Bolton got the better of Russ Porter and Dave Bristow to make it 0-2, only for Stu Morrey to beat Kim Wan Loi to make it 1-2. Ray Talbot’s win over Greg Quinn put the visitors in sight of the win and Talbot and Kim Wan Loi sealed a scrappy fifth frame to confirm the two points.

Victory over the Navigation would give Junction B the Newport Plate trophy title and they did the canal side venue proud by clinching the trophy in style with a 4-2 win. The trophy will be awarded after the 2013 Newport Pool Open final on October 23rd.

Wheatsheaf hosted Junction A and honours were shared on the night and Haberdashers entertained Shakespeare B in the final match of the season and prevailed, 4-2. James Morris beat Russ Woodhouse only for Jess Hilditch to level the score against Sarah Holland. Dave Heeley and Rich Bayliss won the next two frames to make it 3-1 and honours were shared in the doubles.

There will be a meeting next Wednesday at the Shakespeare (July 31st) at 20.00hrs for any team members interested in discussing points that have arisen during the season and ideas for next year before attention switches to the Newport Pool Open over the summer break.
