DEAN SMITH PUTS ONE HAND ON
NEWPORT POOL LEAGUE TROPHY
NEWPORT (Shropshire): Horns B Gnosall faced potentially the final test of their Newport Pool League title credentials with a tricky visit to the Honeysuckle to play the Sutherland Arms team. A win would almost certainly guarantee the title went to the Horns for the first time and skipper Dean Smith came away with a stunning 0-6 result.
George Allen, Mick Manning, Colin Pink and Neil Dale sealed the two points in the singles frames and Smith himself joined the party in rack six.
NRBL A came away from Norbury with two points after beating Junction B, 1-5, but it was not enough to keep the defending champions in the title race and Mick Beech’s side are now relying on a minor miracle if they are to retain the league crown.
Fourth met third in the match between NRBL B and LSC at the Tav and the Legion side sealed both points in a tense match. Accidentally potting the white and the black cost Greg Heathcote the first frame against Simon Walley, but Paul Cartledge redressed the balanced with a win over Mike Jones. George Haveron seven-balled Paul Trevor to make it 2-1 and Rob Holt got the better of John Williams to make it 3-1 before Haveron and Walley sealed the two points in the first doubles rack.
King’s Head A entertained Junction A at Chetwynd End and crushed their Norbury rivals without the loss of a single frame. Graham Tigwell, Irene Whittington, Ross Goodchild and Mick Collins won the singles racks and Ed Keenan and Phil Emery joined the celebration in the doubles.
Shakespeare A virtually ensured a seventh-place finish with a disappointing 3-3 home draw against the Navigation. Singles wins for Richard Hendy. Andy Potter and Ross Richards-Jones cancelled out a tight frame win for Neil Holford, but the Gnosall side prevailed in the doubles racks with Scott Smith sealing the point.
The Railway Tavern remained in contention for the Newport Plate trophy with a 5-1 win over King’s Head B. Chris Perry stunned Jack Dicken to put the aay side in the driving seat, but Adam Stone, Stu Morrey and Dave Bristow claimed the next three frames and Greg Quinn joined the winning side in frame five. The Tavern now lead the Newport Plate by one point.
The Wheatsheaf needed two points against Shakespeare B at Chetwynd Aston to maintain their challenge for the Newport Plate, but they went down to their Upper Bar rivals. Russ Woodhouse and Darren Lowe beat Nigel Sandbrook and Al Harvey to make it 0-2 and Ian Trevor pulled a frame back against Jess Hilditch before Kim Rigby made it 1-3. Woodhouse and Jess Hilditch confirmed the win in frame five.
The Barley Mow visited Horns A in Gnosall and lost by the odd frame and the Haberdashers got the better of the Royal Navy Club in the final match of the evening by a similar 4-2 score line.
