HORNS GNOSALL B NUDGE EVER CLOSER TO MAIDEN POOL TITLE
NEWPORT (Shropshire): Horns Gnosall B moved ever closer to their first Newport & District Pool League title with a comfortable 5-1 victory over Junction A in Gnosall. The result means that they remain two points clear of NRBL A with five games to go.
George Allen beat Hyla Marklew to get the home team off to a good start, but Keith Rogers redressed the balance against Mick Manning. Wins followed for Colin Pink and Neil Dale and the Horns made no mistake in the doubles.
The Newport Legion side crushed bottom side Horns A with the loss of one frame and remain two points adrift. Andy Miles, Wayne Dodd, Ant Heathcote and Mick Beech sealed the points in the singles frames, although the home team pulled a frame back in the doubles.
LSC at the Tavern got back to winning ways with a 5-1 victory at Shakespeare B and remain in the driving seat for third place. Dan O’Connor upset the Paul Cartledge applecart, otherwise it was plain sailing for the visitors with Greg Heathcote, Paul Trevor and John Williams winning their singles frames and LSC also securing the doubles racks.
King’s Head A are now four points behind LSC after succumbing to a shock 4-2 defeat to the Railway Tavern at Upper Bar. NRBL B moved two points clear of the Chetwynd End side after beating the Royal Navy Club, 1-5, at Bellman’s Yard. Simon Walley lost to Allen Pritchett, otherwise it was plain sailing for the visitors, with Rob Holt, Mike Jones and George Haveron winning their singles frames and Jack Jones and Liam Matthews joining the fray in the doubles.
Shakespeare A visited Junction B and were lucky to escape with a draw after a determined home side dug in to move 3-1 ahead. Richard Hendy seven-balled Steve Pervis to make it 0-1, only for Stu Till and Ryan Morris to win the next two frames and Mick Ashforth to win a safety marathon against Neil Perkins to make it 3-1. Hendy and Perkins retained their unbeaten doubles run to make it 3-2 and Ben Holmes made a useful two-ball clearance alongside Dave Marshall to seal a point for the visitors.
Sutherland Arms were forced to work hard for a 4-2 against Navigation in Gnosall, while the Barley Mow were crushed by the Wheatsheaf in Stafford Street. Billy Holland pulled a consolation frame back for the home side, but wins for Paul Skitt and Nigel Sandbrook had set the Chetwynd Aston team on their way to a stunning win.
King’s Head B entertained the Haberdashers from Knighton in the final match of the night at Chetwynd End and the match ended all square.
