HORNS B PRODUCE THE GREAT ESCAPE
TO STAY CLEAR IN NEWPORT POOL LEAGUE

NEWPORT (Shropshire): Horns Gnosall B faced a crucial test of their league title winning potential when they visited LSC at the Tav in a crunch 28th match in the Newport & District Pool League on Wednesday.

Needing at least a draw to stay on track for a first league title, that outcome looked out of sight when they went 3-0 down to a determined home side. Wins for Paul Cartledge, Greg Heathcote and Paul Trevor gave the home side at least a draw, but Neil Dale edged a tense rack against John Williams to give the visitors a chance and Colin Pink and Mick Manning teamed up to beat Williams and Trevor to make it 3-2. The final frame could have gone either way but defending Newport Open Champion Neil Dale held his nerve to seal a top-notch clearance to save the leaders’ unbeaten record.

NRBL A reduced the gap at the top to two points with a 2-4 victory at the Haberdashers Arms in Knighton. Sarah Holland got the better of Wayne Dodd in the singles and Dodd and Mick Beech blotted their copybooks in the doubles, otherwise it was plain sailing for the Legion side.

NRBL B came back from a 0-3 deficit to draw with the Barley Mow. Kim Wan Loi inflicted a second defeat of the season on Rob Holt to make it 0-1 and Billy Holland and Ray Talbot got the better of Mike Jones and George Haveron to make it 0-3. Simon Walley scraped through against Ant Winfield to make it 1-3 and Tom Sayce joined the action in the doubles to seal the draw for NRBL B.

King’s Head A remained on course for a potential top three finish with a 5-1 victory over Shakespeare B at Chetwynd End. Jess Hilditch got the better of Irene Whittington in rack three, but singles wins for Mick Collins, Graham Tigwell and Ross Goodchild were followed by two doubles racks successes for the home side.

Shakespeare A entertained the Railway Tavern at Upper Bar and looked as though they were about to lose their first home match since mid-November when they went 1-2 down to wins for Jack Dicken and birthday boy Stu Morrey to cancel out Andy Potter’s success against Russ Porter. But Neil Perkins hit back with a seven-ball clearance against Greg Quinn in frame four and Ben Holmes and Ross Richards-Jones produced two excellent pots on blacks to seal the doubles frames and sour Morrey’s Hawaiian birthday celebrations.

The Sutherland Arms continued to close in on the top five with a comfortable 5-1 victory over King’s Head B and Junction A got the better of the Royal Navy Club with the loss of two frames. Horns Gnosall A lost, 1-5, to runaway Newport Plate leaders Junction B and Wheatsheaf and Navigation fought out a 3-3 in the final match of the night.
