HORNS B SKIPPER DEAN SMITH HAS ONE
HAND ON NEWPORT POOL LEAGUE TROPHY

NEWPORT (Shropshire): Horns Gnosall B overcame a tricky visit to the King’s Head and retained a three-point lead at the top of the Newport & District Pool League after week 25 matches. Skipper Dean Smith gloated about the crushing 1-5 win and now reckons that the league title is out of his main rivals’ reach.

George Allen beat Ross Goodchild to get the visitors off to the perfect start, only for Market Drayton Open finalist Graham Tigwell to level the match with a win over Mick Manning. Colin Pink and Neil Dale beat Irene Whittington and Mick Collins to make it 1-3 and Ed Keenan was subjected to another miserable evening in the doubles as the Gnosall team ran riot to make it 1-5.

NRBL A overcame the rigours of the famous Wheatsheaf left-hand corner to seal both points in a similar 1-5 win at Chetwynd Aston. But the gap remains three points. Andy Miles got the better of Nigel Sandbrook to make it 0-1, Wayne Dodd beat Ian Trevor and Mick Beech edged Al Harvey to make it 0-3. But Paul Skitt stopped Ant Heathcote chirping in rack four to pull a frame back, only for NRBL A to bounce back with two doubles wins.

LSC at the Tav demolished the Barley Mow at Upper Bar. Greg Heathcote, Ben Longstaff, Paul Trevor and John Williams did the damage against Gary Bolton, Martin Porter, Ray Talbot and Billy Holland and there was no way back for the ‘away’ side even when Kim Wan Loi jolned the fray in the sixth frame.

NRBL B kept up the pressure for a top three finish with a comfortable 6-0 win over King’s Head B. Simon Walley, Rob Holt, George Haveron and Mike Jones saw off Chris Perry, Ian Perry, Lucy Hennessey and Maggie O’Brien in the singles and it was curtains for the visitors in the doubles frames.

Shakespeare A came away from the Horns with both points after a tense 2-4 victory over a revised bottom side in Gnosall. Richard Hendy rode his luck to beat Martyn Holford and Dave Marshall scrapped to make it 0-2 with a win over Wayne Baker. Russ Cooke pulled a frame back against Ross Richards-Jones before Neil Perkins edged a tight frame against Dai Smith to make it 1-3. Charles Minors and Smith pulled the match back to 2-3, but a seven-ball clearance by Perkins in rack six confirmed the points for the away side.

The Sutherland Arms maintained their impressive climb towards the top five with a 5-1 win over Junction B at the Honeysuckle, while Junction A hosted the Navigation in an all-Staffordshire clash and dropped just one frame to their rivals.

Shakespeare B leapt into contention for the Newport Plate trophy with a 3-3 draw over the Royal Navy Club, Alan Pritchett’s win over Darren Lowe being the highlight of the Navy’s fight back.

The Haberdashers hosted the Railway Tavern in Knighton and the visitors dropped just two frames, with Jack Dicken, Adam Stone and Dave Bristow winning their singles frames and Greg Quinn and Stu Morrey joining the fray to win a crucial doubles’ frame. The Tavern move up to third in the Newport Plate on frame difference.
