HORNS GNOSALL B SEE DAYLIGHT
AT TOP OF NEWPORT POOL LEAGUE
NEWPORT (Shropshire): There is daylight at the top of the Newport Pool League for the first time after Horns Gnosall B demolished the Royal Navy Club with the loss of just one frame and NRBL A suffered a shock home defeat against their B team at Newport Legion.
The Gnosall team head into the final nine matches of the season with a three-point advantage thanks to singles wins for George Allen, Mick Manning and Colin Pink against Dennis Holland, Alan Pritchett and Mark Kijuk and two doubles rack victories. Gerry Nunn pulled a consolation frame back against Newport open champion Neil Dale.
Rivals NRBL A faced their fifth-placed B team in a tense and much-hyped tussle at Newport Legion and the outcome could well cost the defending champions their league title. It looked to be going according to plan when Andy Miles and Colin Farge got the better of George Haveron and Mike Jones, but Simon Walley and Rob Holt hit back against Mick Beech and Wayne Dodd to level the score. Walley and Haveron prevailed in the fifth frame for the B team and Liam Matthews joined an in-form Holt to seal a stunning win in rack six.
King’s Head A visited bottom side Horns A without star player and landlord Mick Collins, but Graham Tigwell held the side together and they dropped just one frame to retain third in the league.
LSC at the Tav were without skipper Greg ‘sunbed’ Heathcote for their tricky encounter with the Navigation in Gnosall, but they held their nerve to seal a 1-5 win. Paul Cartledge, John Williams and Paul Trevor got the better of Steve Whitlock, Scott Podmore and Geoff Arrowsmith and LSC won the doubles racks despite Ben Longstaff relinquishing a singles frame to Neil Holford.
Sutherland Arms continued their run of good form with a tense 2-4 victory over the Railway Tavern at Upper Bar. Dave Bristow got the better of Colin Smith to give the home side a perfect start, but Matt Mansell levelled against Greg Quinn. Adam Stone again put the home team in front against Jack Hooper, but an inspired Trevor Smith led the fight back with a win over Stu Morrey and the villagers won both doubles racks, despite Jack Dicken and Russ Porter joining the fight in rack five.
Barley Mow hosted Shakespeare B and the visitors earned a deserved draw. Billy Holland and Gary Bolton lost out to Russ Woodhouse and Jess Hilditch in the first two racks but Ray Talbot and Ant Winfield made it 2-2 with wins over Jane Hilditch and Kim Rigby. Winfield and Martin Porter made it 3-2 to the home side in frame five, but Rigby and Jane Hilditch got the better of Talbot and Kim Wan Loi to seal a stunning draw.
Shakespeare A remain unbeaten at home since November 14th after cruising to a rapid-fire 5-1 win over the Haberdashers Arms. Richard Hendy, Ross Richards-Jones, Neil Perkins and Dave Marshall sealed the points with singles wins over Dave Heeley, Sarah Holland, James Morris and Vicky Winter and Ben Holmes joined the fray in the fifth as the score rose to 5-0. But Winter was not to be denied and a stunning clearance by the Knighton skipper deprived Marshall and Richards-Jones of the rout.
King’s Head B hosted Junction A at Chetwynd End and won just one frame in a 1-5 defeat and honours were shared in the final match of the night between Newport Plate leaders Junction B and rivals Wheatsheaf.
