HORNS GNOSALL B GO TOP AS NRBL A FALTER IN NORBURY

NEWPORT (Shropshire): Horns Gnosall B are the new leaders of the Newport Pool League heading into the final 10 games of the season. They won their match against the Barley Mow with the loss of just one frame on a night when NRBL A were held to a 3-3 draw by a stubborn Junction A side. One point now separates the two sides.

Horns B were in good form against the Barley Mow in Gnosall. George Allen and Mick Manning made it 2-0 to the home side before Gary Bolton hit back against Neil Dale. Colin Pink made it 3-1 against Ant Winfield and Dean Smith joined the fray in the doubles as the home quintet made it 5-1.

Andy Miles and Wayne Dodd put NRBL A into a 2-0 lead against Hyla Marklew and Sion Richards, but Keith Rogers ousted Mick Beech and Steve Roycroft rode his luck to see off a distraught Ant Heathcote to make it 2-2. Rogers and Roycroft played well in rack five to pip Miles and Dodd to make it 3-2, but Beech and Heathcote came to the rescue to seal the vital point.

King’s Head A maintained third place on frame difference with a 5-1 win over the Royal Navy Club and LSC at the Tav kept up the pressure with a 6-0 victory over King’s Head B. Mick Collins, Ross Goodchild and Irene Whittington won their singles racks for the King’s and, although Ed Keenan blotted his copybook, the quartet was triumphant in the doubles.

Greg Heathcote, Paul Cartledge, Paul Trevor and John Williams took just 45 minutes to see off King’s Head B at the Tavern. Wins came against Lorna Phee, Lyn Day, Maggie O’Brien and Lucy Hennessey and there was no way back in the doubles for the ladies side. NRBL B remain one point behind after defeating Junction B, 4-2, at Newport Legion.

The Sutherland Arms entertained Shakespeare A at the Honeysuckle, and won a tight match by the odd frame. Richard Hendy got the visitors off to a perfect start with a seven-ball clearance against Ian Swinnerton, but Trevor Smith levelled in a tight match against Ross Richards-Jones. Jack Hooper put Neil Perkins in seven snookers on his way to a 40-minute third-frame win and, when Andy Potter missed a plant to throw himself a lifeline against Matt Mansell, it was 3-1 to the home side. Colin Smith and Mansell made sure of the two points in frame five and Hendy and Perkins won the deadest of sixth frame rubbers to make it 2-4.

Honours were shared in the clash between the Navigation and Shakespeare B at Upper Bar and there was a similar tight score line in the match between the Railway Tavern and the Wheatsheaf at Chetwynd Aston. The Haberdashers got the better of Horns A by the odd frame in the final match of the night.
