FOUR-TWO WINS FOR TOP TWO IN NEWPORT POOL LEAGUE

NEWPORT (Shropshire): Table-topping NRBL A and Horns Gnosall B faced two tricky matches in week 23 of fixtures in the Newport & District Pool League and both teams emerged unscathed with 4-2 wins.

NRBL A faced potentially their toughest remaining game of the season with a home clash against in-form LSC and they managed to win four of the frames, with former LSC player Andy Miles gloating about an eight-ball clearance in his frame against his old side.

Horns B travelled across Gnosall to play at the Navigation and squeezed a narrow win. Scott Smith got the better of Colin Pink to put the home side into the lead, but Mick Manning, Neil Dale and George Allen beat Geoff Arrowsmith, Neil Holford and Steve Whitlock to make it 1-3. Smith and R. Daniels set up a nail-biting final frame by getting the better of Allen and Manning, but Pink and Dale came to the rescue for the Horns in the final frame. Frame difference still separates for the two sides.

Railway Tavern played host to fading NRBL B at Upper Bar, but the away side bounced back to form with a comfortable 1-5 win. The Sutherland Arms snatched both points with a similar victory at Horns A and have now confirmed that they will play their remaining home games this season from the Honeysuckle in Newport.

Barley Mow were held to a 3-3 draw by a plucky Royal Navy Club and Shakespeare A maintained their useful home form after grinding out a draw with a stubborn Wheatsheaf side.

Nigel Sandbrook put the away side in front against Richard Hendy, but Ross Richards-Jones, Ben Holmes and Andy Potter got the better of Ian Trevor, Mark Hodgkinson and Paul Skitt to make it 3-1. The ‘Sheaf won both doubles racks to snatch the draw.

The all-Norbury clash between the Junction’s A and B teams ended all-square and Shakespeare B were stunned by lowly King’s Head B at Chetwynd End and a 5-1 away defeat means they missed their chance of taking the lead in the Newport Plate table. The home side achieved the stunning result, despite the absence of star player Ian Perry, who is currently on a tour of Australia

The Haberdashers Arms entertained King’s Head A in Knighton but were beaten by the Newport side with the loss of just one frame. The Chetwynd End team climbed back to third in the table on frame difference.
