NRBL A AND HORNS B REMAIN ON
COURSE IN NEWPORT POOL LEAGUE
NEWPORT (Shropshire): NRBL A maintained their lead at the top of the Newport & District Pool League with a hard-earned 2-4 victory at Gnosall’s Navigation.
Neil Holford managed to get the better of the in-form Andy Miles to put the home side in front, but Jason Taphouse and Ant Heathcote ousted Geoff Arrowsmith and Steve Whitlock to make it 1-2 before the Navigation levelled. The Legion regrouped to snatch both doubles racks and keep the title dream alive.
Horns B entertained Shakespeare A in Gnosall and subjected the visitors to their fourth defeat of the season to keep up their pursuit of the Newport Legion side. It was a humbling evening for the Shakespeare, with George Allen. Mick Manning, Colin Pink and Neil Dale doing the damage in four very diverse singles racks where the result could have gone the other way quite easily in three of them. Two close doubles racks followed and Horns skipper Dean Smith got in on the action to seal the Shake’s misery.
NRBL B hosted the Wheatsheaf in Newport and ended up securing both points by the odd frame. Liam Matthews and Mike Jones got the better of Al Harvey and Nigel Sandbrook to make it 2-0, but Paul Skitt upset Jack Jones to pull a frame back for the Chetwynd Aston side. Simon Walley beat Mark Hodgskinson in the fourth frame to make it 3-1 and honours were shared in the doubles.
King’s Head A crushed their B team at Chetwynd End to retain fourth place. Phil Emery seven-balled Lyn Day off the break to make it 1-0 to the A team, but Ian Perry sneaked passed Graham Tigwell to level the match. From then on it was one-way traffic for the fourth-placed side and Mick Collins, Irene Whittington, Ed Keenan and Ross Goodchild joined the party to make it 5-1.
LSC at the Tav stayed in the hunt for a top three finish with a 5-1 home victory over Knighton’s Haberdashers, despite one of their players slipping and suffering a minor cartilage injury. Greg Heathcote, Paul Trevor and Ben Longstaff won their singles racks to put last year’s league runners-up on the way to victory.
The Barley Mow were beaten 4-2 by Junction B in the shock result of the evening and mid-table Junction A and Sutherland Arms fought out a tense match in Norbury, with the away side prevailing with the loss of just one frame to secure an excellent result.
The Railway Tavern began their secondary campaign for success in the Newport League Plate with a 5-1 victory at the Royal Navy Club. Russ Porter, Dave Bristow and Adam Stone won their singles racks, but Greg Quinn blotted his copybook in an otherwise winning performance for the early leaders of the Plate.
Shakespeare B also made a winning start to their challenge for the league’s secondary prize by edging Horns A at Upper Bar. Russ Woodhouse, Darren Lowe and Kim Rigby won their singles racks and Woodhouse and Jane Hilditch secured both points after Dai Smith had pulled a frame back for the Gnosall side.
