NRBL A AND HORNS B MARCH ON IN NEWPORT POOL LEAGUE

NEWPORT (Shropshire): NRBL A steadied their creaking ship and returned to winning ways by demolishing King’s Head B to remain top of the Newport & District Pool League at the half-way stage.

Only Ant Heathcote blotted his copybook against veteran Ian Perry in a comfortable 1-5 win for the Newport side, although the pressure is beginning to mount for the defending champions.

Horns B kept up the pressure with a 5-1 victory over their A team in Gnosall. George Allen was in superb potting form to crush Martyn Holford and Neil Dale and Mick Manning made it 3-0 with wins over Charles Minors and Dai Smith. A series of unforced errors by Colin Pink handed Jake Anstey the advantage in the fourth frame, but the second-placed side returned to winning ways in both doubles racks with Dean Smith joining the fray in rack six.

Third met fourth in the clash between NRBL B and the King’s Head at Newport Legion and honours were shared. Mick Collins and Irene Whittington put the visitors into a 0-2 lead over Liam Matthews and Mike Jones, but the Legion B side are made of sterner stuff and Jack Jones pulled a frame back against Ross Goodchild.

Simon Walley met Ed Keenan in a grudge fourth frame and the home player survived one black ball error to seal the frame and level the match. Jones and Matthews redeemed themselves against Collins and Whittington in frame five, but Graham Tigwell came to the rescue for the away team in the final rack to seal the draw.

LSC at the Tav entertained the Sutherland Arms at Upper Bar and cam away with both points against a resurgent village side. Greg Heathcote and John Williams had the measure of Ian Swinnerton and Jack Hooper to make it 2-0, only for Trevor Smith to pull a frame back against Ben Longstaff. Paul Cartledge restored the two-frame cushion with a win over Matt Mansell and the home side won both doubles racks.

The Barley Mow faced a tricky home match against the Railway Tavern and ran away with a rampant 5-1 win, with Gary Bolton humiliating Greg Quinn with a seven-ball clearance in a singles frame.

Draw specialists Shakespeare A finished the first half of the season with the loss of just three matches after beating the Royal Navy Club, 1-5, in a poor match. The game was settled in the away side’s favour in four scrappy singles frames – where the away side benefited from a favourable run of play – although Dennis Holland and Gerry Nunn did pull a doubles rack back for the home side in rack five.

Junction A hosted the Wheatsheaf in Norbury and whitewashed the opposition with Mark Hodgkinson living up to his fiery reputation, once again, for the away side. Hyla Marklew, Keith Rogers, Steve Roycroft and Gordon Sidebottom did the damage for the home side in the singles frames against Nigel Sandbrook, Al Harvey, Mark Hodgkinson and Paul Skitt and there was no way back for the away side.

The Navigation drew with the Junction B in an all-Staffordshire clash and Shakespeare B lost out to Knighton’s Haberdashers after winning just two frames.

Now we have reached the halfway point in the league, the Railway Tavern, Shakespeare B, Junction B, Wheatsheaf, Horns Gnosall A, Royal Navy Club, Haberdashers and King’s Head B will remain in the main league as normal, but they will also be entered in a separate league of eight for the remaining 17 games of the season.

Starting from scratch next Wednesday, the winner will receive the Newport Pool Plate at the end-of-season awards to be held during the finals’ night for the 2013 Newport Pool Open in October.
