NRBL A STUMBLE TO THE SHAKE A
BUT STAY ON TOP IN POOL LEAGUE

NEWPORT (Shropshire): NRBL A entertained Shakespeare A at Newport Legion and were given a reality check by the league’s under-achievers after a tense encounter. Honours were eventually shared after the away side had gone into a 2-3 lead.

Shake skipper Andy Potter switched his usual order and Andy Miles beat Ross Richards-Jones to put the home side 1-0 up. Wayne Dodd got the better of Dave Marshall to make it 2-0, but the Shake rallied. Andy Potter beat Mick Beech and Richard Hendy edged out Antony Heathcote to make it 2-2.

The upset was on the cards when Hendy and Marshall managed to get the better of Heathcote and Jason Taphouse, but Miles and Dodd secured the draw against Potter and Richards-Jones in one of the longest doubles racks for some time.

Horns B kept up the pressure by getting the better of third-placed NRBL B in Gnosall, despite Rob Holt beating the in-form George Allen to put the away side in front. Colin Pink levelled the match with a win over Luke Jones and Neil Dale beat it 2-1 against Mike Jones. Simon Walley levelled the match with a fine frame win over Mick Manning and the match was nicely poised.

But the Gnosall side held their nerve: Allen and Manning put them into a 3-2 lead with a win over Walley and Jack Jones and Dale and Pink sealed the win by beating Liam Matthews and Holt. The Horns are now just one point behind NRBL A with 21 games still to play!

The King’s Head A travelled to LSC at the Tavern in a crunch top five clash and the home side won with the loss of just one frame. Junction A visited Shakespeare B and came away with two points after a 2-4 win.

The Railway Tavern needed to put a run of poor performances behind them when they travelled to Norbury to meet Junction B and they sealed their best win of the season. Adam Stone, Stu Morrey, Dave Bristow and Greg Quinn sealed the two points in the singles racks and the quartet also prevailed in the doubles frames.

The Navigation met Knighton’s Haberdashers in Gnosall and the home side deservedly earned both points with the loss of just one frame. King’s Head B and Horns A battled for valuable points in a foot-of-the-table clash at Chetwynd End and the Gnosall side dropped just one frame after a useful win.

The Barley Mow postponed their game against the Sutherland Arms in Newport High Street and the game was forfeited, as per the regulations. Bottom side Royal Navy Club were also handed a walkover win against the Wheatsheaf.
