NRBL A REMAIN ON COURSE FOR POOL LEAGUE TITLE
NEWPORT (Shropshire): NRBL A maintained a two-point lead at the top of the Newport & District Pool League after thrashing the Horns A team in Gnosall during the 12th round of matches.
Skipper Mick Beech set the away team on the way with a win over Neil Holford and Andy Miles, Ant Heathcote and Wayne Dodd sealing all three points in the next three singles frames. “It was routine in the doubles for us to seal the rout,” boasted Heathcote.
The Horns B team kept up the pressure with a useful 5-1 win over Junction A in Norbury. George Allen and Colin Pink got the ‘mercenaries’ off to a 0-2 start with wins over Sion Richards and Keith Rogers and Mick Manning made it three by snatching the frame from Hyla Marklew. The points were sealed by Neil Dale’s win over Steve Roycroft in rack four, although Richards and Steve Horton pulled a frame back for the visitors by beating Pink and Dale in the final doubles contest.
NRBL B also maintained their superb start to the season with a 5-1 victory over the Royal Navy Club.
King’s Head A hosted the Railway Tavern at Chetwynd End and trailed 0-2 after the visitors made a useful start through Stu Morrey and Russ Porter. But Greg Quinn lost on the black to Mick Collins and Adam Stone’s defeat saw the match level at 2-2 heading into the doubles. Morrey, Dave Bristow, Quinn and Porter lost their doubles matches, as the King’s Head snatched a useful three points.
LSC at the Tavern kept up their pursuit of the top four with a 5-1 victory over Shakespeare B. Greg Heathcote lost out in frame one to Russ Woodhouse, but Paul Trevor, John Williams and Ben Longstaff put the home side into a 1-3 lead and never looked back in the doubles.
Honours were shared in the clash between the Barley Mow and the Wheatsheaf at Chetwynd Aston and the Sutherland Arms maintained their push towards the top six with a 4-2 win over Gnosall’s Navigation.
Shakespeare A cruised through against Junction B at Upper Bar. Andy Potter and Dave Marshall got the better of Dave Owen and Stu Till to make it 2-0 to the home side. Ross Richards-Jones beat Ryan Morris and Ben Holmes sealed both points with a win over Mick Ashforth. Potter and Marshall succumbed to Owen and Till in rack five, but Richards-Jones and Holmes made sure of the comfortable win in the final frame.
King’s Head B earned their first win of the season with an excellent 2-4 victory in a foot-of-the-table clash against the Haberdashers in Knighton.
