HORNS GNOSALL B BEAT KING’S HEAD A TO STAY CLEAR
NEWPORT (Shropshire): Horns B were made to work hard to retain their slender lead in the Newport & District Pool League with a 5-1 victory over the King’s Head A in Gnosall.
Graham Tigwell kept up his unbeaten record for the visitors, but it was one-way traffic otherwise, with Ed Keenan unfortunate to lose his frame and Phil Emery and Irene Whittington also losing crucial frames to Dean Smith’s title favourites.
NRBL A kept up the pressure with a tense and tight victory over the Wheatsheaf and the defending champions can go top if they win their game in hand against title rivals NRBL B. They came back from 1-2 down against a determined ‘Sheaf side to stay in touch at the top of the table.
The Legion B team warmed up for that postponed showdown by whitewashing King’s Head B at Chetwynd End. New sensation Rob Holt kept up his impressive form by beating Ian Perry in frame one and it was one-way traffic for the former league leaders from then on.
LSC at the Tav needed to beat the high-flying Barley Mow to stay in touch with the leading group, but it was not to be and, despite Barley skipper Ant Winfield taking an extended holiday, the home team sealed both points with the loss of just one frame.
Gary Bolton made a useful six-ball clearance to defeat Greg Heathcote – after the away skipper had missed the black – Martin Porter got the better of Ian Roberts and Ray Talbot beat Ben Longstaff to make it 3-0. Billy Holland sealed the points against an unfortunate Paul Trevor in rack four, but John Williams came to the away side’s rescue with a good clearance in frame five. Ashley Vaughan and Kim Wan Loi rounded off a glorious night for the home side to compound Longstaff’s and Trevor’s misery.
Junction A started the evening in seventh position and faced a tricky match against the improving Navigation in an all-Staffordshire clash. Honours were shared after a useful performance by the improving Navigation side.
Shakespeare A hosted lowly Horns A without two of their regular players but came up with the goods after an excellent 4-2 win. Martin Halford got the better of Ross Richards-Jones to put the away team in front, but Andy Potter pipped Steve Bullock to level the score.
Shake debutant Richard Hendy lost to Jake Anstey and it looked bleak for the home team until home landlord Ben Holmes beat name sake Richard and the Shake won both doubles racks, with Potter and Holmes sealing the win after Richards-Jones and Hendy had taken frame five.
The Railway Tavern hosted Knighton’s Haberdashers at Upper Bar and put the match out of sight in the singles racks. Dave Bristow, Steve and Stu Morrey and Greg Quinn sealed the two points and Russ Porter and Jason ‘Whirlwind’ Lloyd made it 5-0. Despite Adam Stone potting the white off the break in the final frame, the home side prevailed to seal the whitewash.
Shakespeare B were held to a tense 3-3 by the Royal Navy Club and Tibberton’s Sutherland Arms visited Junction B in the final match of the evening and honours were also shared in Norbury.
