HORNS GNOSALL B MOVE TO THE
TOP OF NEWPORT POOL LEAGUE

NEWPORT (Shropshire): Dean Smith’s Horns Gnosall B hit the summit of the Newport & District Pool League for the first time with an emphatic 6-0 win over the Royal Navy Club on Wednesday night.

George Allen, Mick Manning, Colin Pink and Neil Dale did the damage in the singles racks and Smith joined the New Year party in frame five to seal the rout for the Staffordshire side. “Curtains,” yaked Smith.

LSC at the Tav benefited from the postponement of the Legion derby clash and climbed to fifth with a 4-2 win over the Navigation. Ian Roberts, Paul Trevor and Ben Longstaff won the first three frames but Neil Holford got the better of John Williams to pull a frame back for the visitors. Honours were shared in the doubles, with Scott Smith joining Holford to seal a crucial vital frame for the Gnosall side.

Shakespeare B entertained the Barley Mow at Upper Bar but lost all but one frame to the inebriated visitors. Gary Bolton was pushed all the way by Darren Lowe in frame one and then Ray Talbot, Ant Winfield and Kim Wan Loi made it 0-4. Jane Hilditch and Russ Woodhouse pulled a frame back for the home side but Billy Holland joined Talbot to confirm the rout in rack six.

Junction A were held to a 3-3 draw against King’s Head B and King’s Head A also missed their chance to take top spot after being held to a similar result by Horns Gnosall A.

Graham Tigwell kept up his 100% record with a win over Randy Cooke, but M. Holford levelled the score against Mick Collins only for Ed Keenan to beat Charlie Minors and put the home side ahead. R. Holmes levelled for the away side and honours were shared in the doubles frames with Keenan and Tigwell scraping a draw for the home side in rack six.

Shakespeare A travelled to the Haberdashers in Knighton and honours were shared in a scrappy match on a tricky cloth. Dave Heeley, Andy Potter, Rich Bayliss and Ross Richards-Jones shared four frames to leave the match poised at 2-2 heading into the doubles. The away side missed two simple chances to clinch the match, only for Vicky Winter to join James Morris and put the home side 3-2 ahead. It took a little luck and a nervy pot by Richards-Jones to save the Shake’s blushes and snatch the draw.

Sutherland Arms hosted the Railway Tavern in a mid-table match in Tibberton and the home side dropped just two frames on their way to a useful win. Kevin Moore, Matt Mansell and Percival Parton put the home side in control against Dave Bristow, Jason Lloyd and Stu Morrey and it was left to Greg Quinn to throw the Tavern a lifeline. Honours were shared in the doubles, but the Tibberton side confirmed both points by winning frame five.

Wheatsheaf played Junction B in a foot-of-the-table clash at Chetwynd Aston and failed to snatch a single frame against their rampant Norbury opposition. “They well and truly capitulated,” joked Junction B’s Mick Ashcroft.

NRBL A had snatched top spot in the league on December 30th by winning their postponed match against LSC at the Tavern. Greg Heathcote opened the home side’s account with a black ball win over Legion skipper Mick Beech, but a solid clearance from Darren Pountney levelled the score against Paul Trevor and NRBL A edged in front when Wayne Dodd cleared from an Andy Lycett foul break.

John Williams came to the rescue for LSC with a useful win against Ant Heathcote in the fourth singles frame and rack five between Dodd/Heathcote and Lycett/Trevor was a stalemate until referee Dean Smith called a foul on Dodd when several of the crowd and certain team players had seen a ball move. Heated discussions followed and the decision was taken by the referee to have the balls re-racked, with Dodd/Heathcote prevailing to give NRBL A the lead.

The final frame was another tight affair with Pountney/Beech struggling to get the better of Heathcote/Williams until Heathcote ran up to short on a snooker and handed a nervous Beech the chance to clear three colours and the black. The Legion skipper held his nerve to seal the frame and two vital points for the defending champions.
